I think most gamers can at least recognize one or two games from the above. Do you think 2D games are ageless? Is it a genre that we'll still be seeing in 20-50+ years?
That's a sweeping generalization; MANY of them have aged poorly and were never great to begin with. But I will say there's a certain timeless quality to certain old 2D games. That's why so many recent acclaimed games try to use that same style (Shovel Knight, Shantae, etc.).
Yes, and they will continue forever because they are cheap to make for indie developers, and certain people like them because they think its very "artsy".
Yes And I agree that 2D games usually have better replay values. I think it's because they rely heavily on gameplay to make up for the poor graphics, it's usually infectious whereas 3D games are usually more story-driven.
Nostalgia for some games. Some have "great" graphics or timeless gameplay, like Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island or Castlevania:SotN, to name few. They have very polished graphics, which are pretty solid even for today standards.
Yes. They don't become dated because there isn't really an emphasis on becoming the "next level" of realism that 3D games have with every generation with the blatant goal of advancing.
