Does the attention on social media increase the likelihood
Nowadays with social media basically dominating and controlling the every-day-life of society, especially for the more recent generations, do you believe that this will increase the likelihood of an individual to commit a horrific act after seeing how much the entire social media world seems to blow up every time a tragedy occurs and the amount of attention given to the offender?
It's always been theorized that sometimes such acts are committed for that sole reason, especially when it is that of a "copycat criminal". I feel like social media is so powerful, and now with social media being such a significant factor, whereas before it was mainly only through word-of-mouth and news coverage, it increases the amount of attention, the intensity and the speed in which news is spread. What are your thoughts on this and how do you feel about it?
I don't get why someone would commit a mass shooting for fame. Your dead so it's not like you can experience the fame or anything
Doesn't matter. A lot of serial killers and other criminals just want notoriety. They don't have to experience it. They just love to know that everyone will remember their name and face and all the things they did.
Yes it likely does have an impact but I don't think it is really anything new, the mass media has probably always influenced copycat attacks. What I don't like about social media coverage is that it isn't controlled like what you would see on TV, on social media people can just say what they want and even praise these attacks or trivialize them because of their targets and I think that has a bigger impact because you have these views which have the potential to broadcast to a much larger audience than they ever could of been before and I think that this is more important than what the source of news actually is.
