SWIFT CURRENT: The new Taylor Swift album, Speak Now, hit retail today in order to get a full seven-day count for its chart debut next Tuesday. Insiders are saying that Universal Music Group Distribution shipped around 2 million copies of the Big Machine/ Universal Republic release, which flies in the face of the current pessimistic climate at retail. Industry pundits are pointing to disappointing first-week sales by the likes of Katy Perry for retailers’ conservative attitude towards ordering product, thus deflating shipment totals across the board. this is actually below my expectation. i had no intention of buying the album at all, but she hypnotized my mind and made me buy it. i expect at least 800k +

This is based on Monday's sales. Let's wait til the Tuesday update. Remember, Eminem's projections kept increasing each day and they are saying that Taylor may dethrone him.

IDK, it can't be true she's only selling 600k given the huge popularity she has on itunes right now. But if this prediction is actualy right, I guess it's a relatively good opening week.

You never know, Katy's album was #1 and #2 on iTunes, #1 on Amazon, #1 at Best Buy and Walmart, and she sold just under 200k...
I always use Katy as an example b/c that's when I really started paying attention to album sales.

I think the fact the he felt the need to say that shows this number is a little disappointing. And you know it won't have the longevity of Fearless either.

How is that (early) prediction disappointing? If that prediction holds, it will be the second biggest opening week of 2010. And who's expecting it to have the longevity of an album that sold over 6 million units in a declining music industry?
