Open Relationships trump Closed Ones among Gay Men
Quote:
The survey taken by The Melbourne Gay Community Periodic Survey into the sexual behaviour of gay and bisexual men in the Australian state of Victoria found that 32% of the 2886 men questioned were in open relationships.
This compared to the 31% of respondents who said they were in monogamous relationships, and the 23% who said they were only having casual sex.
Meanwhile, almost half of respondents (48%) reported using the hook-up apps like Grindr to meet other men, while the increasing shift towards technology was reinforced by the fact that just 29% said they met men in bars.
The survey also revealed that 5.1% of HIV negative men said they on HIV-preventing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication.
I personally won't be quick to judge. If a couple can find a way to get over jealousy in these types of relationships then more power to them.
These type of people believe that 1. love is exponential and you can fall madly in love with more than one person in life or 2. they've accepted that humans are naturally polygamous and it would be cruel to expect their lovers to just be tied down solely by them. I guess you can't tell someone how they can interpret love
This is disappointing but I feel the younger generation of gays will be much more willing to be in committed relationships. Gays ages 15 - 25 right now are the first real generation of gays to be allowed to be themselves at such a young age and I think the fact that older gays had to stay in the closet for so long attributes to the fact that they don't seek monogamous relationships.
