News: Woman has job WITHDRAWN bc of her braids

She added: 'Being a black woman means that to have a long term hairstyle that stays neat is always going to be a problem. 'Having braids that last for 2-4 months and can be packed neatly and styled to however a workplace requires is the solution to this problem. 'No workplace has any right to forbid you from this.'This is discrimination and I am disgusted that I had to be subject to such behaviour in this 21st century. It is not okay.'

Ms Odoffin, who has chosen not to name the company, then said: ‘I will be speaking to a lawyer about this tomorrow and will be contacting the company.’

Do you non-black people understand how privilege plays into this? A white woman donning braids would be deemed as a 'hippie'' and 'free spirit' whereas black women are vilified and marginalised for the same hairstyle.

Why would a company risk their reputation like this? I doubt such formal and obvious form of discrimination would ever take place, but then again, it wouldn't surprise me if this is true.

My city is mostly black and the only places I've ever seen employ people with dreads are fast food restaurants, clothing retail, Walmart and one school. The discrimination against black hair is very real.

The way that email is worded sounds like she's part of an agency. I started working with one last week and they have very strict guidelines with regards to hair. I have to get mine cut every two weeks and I have to be clean shaven all the time. If it's part of the guidelines that her clients request then she really can't do much about it tbh

It's a shame though because she has really nice braids.

My friend was offered a job last summer at one of the biggest auditing firms I'm the country on condition that he shave his dreadlocks (he has an MBA from Chicago BTW, so he's extremely qualified)
