Doctor Who: BBC want new doctor to bring popularity back.
Quote:
BBC bosses expect Peter Capaldi to leave Doctor Who after the next series – when writer Steven Moffat also steps down.
The 57-year-old’s tenure as the 12th Doctor is likely to end in 2017.
A source on the BBC show said: “Bosses are already discussing a fresh start when Steven leaves
“They hope he will be able to find someone who can have the same impact as Matt Smith did when Steven Moffat kicked off his run as executive producer.”
A BBC spokesman said Capaldi was signed up for the 2017 series but beyond that said: “We don’t discuss contracts.”

Tl;dr: They want a new doctor for the new head writer, and they want the popularity Doctor Who had when Matt Smith reigned (as he had the most impact during the shows revived run).
I still think a new writer would be good for Capaldi, and that Steven has really done him wrong.
Steven brought Peter's dream to life, but made it the Doctor & Clara show, instead of Doctor Who. ![:(](http://www.atrl.net/forums/images/smilies/images/smilies/frown.gif)

I loved Matt Smith so much as the doctor, Peter is alright but he was never going to be a ratings magnet

I don't have much faith for the new head writer, his Doctor Who episodes haven't been that good ![Dancehall Queen](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/dancehall_zps88e4c4c6.png) but he did write Broadchurch which was amazing, but then the awful second series happened
I can see the current Doctor leaving after Moffat's last series in 2017, it would give the new writer a clean slate to start his stories off. We'll see

He has been in the US, the US just don't know how much better the writing can be a lot of the time.
The UK do know better.
I mean, people always say Tennant was the one who made Doctor Who massive, but sorry it was Matt.
Matt was the one who made each season top iTunes around the globe, had good international ratings and just made it have huge cultural impact. While Season 7 was a mess, Matt at least held the show on his shoulders. But Capaldi hasn't had a good season, which is why people get bored of the doctor.
But the last few episodes of S9 show Capaldi is really good with some good writing.

It's one of the best shows on TV, it's just been in need of a new head writer since Series 8.

Matt smiths run with River song was really epic, the story arcs and mystery in the show were fantastic. The 1 off episodes of last season really hurt the show in my opinion + having an old doctor was never going to draw in the crowds

Really? I would say David Tennant had slightly more. I think they referenced Matt Smith because he was the first doctor for a new writer and eased the transition very well.

Tennant was popular, but Matt was the one who made the series massive WW, and in the US.
When Matt joined DW, the success of the show jumped majorly;
Quote:
The Doctor Who franchise made the biggest value leap last year with revenue climbing 49%, thanks to significant growth in the US. BBC Worldwide has seen a 45% increase in DVD and download-to-own sales, with Doctor Who the third-biggest seller in the US iTunes chart behind Mad Men and Glee.

Doctor Who revenue jumped almost 50% and DVD and iTunes sales also jumped 45%.
It also became the 3rd best selling TV show in the US.
Matt was the one that made Doctor Who huge. Tennant literally had half the success of Matt.

The show hasnt been the same since RTD left, its become a kids program and just cringy to watch for anyone over 15
Its needs to get its serious edge back, thats what made it a family show, yes it had its silly moments but people of all ages got emotional with the Doctor/Rose story, everyone laughed at Catherine Tate's comedic acting and David Tennant leaving was a HUGE cultural moment
Matt Smiths childish acting, the cheesy storylines, the singing to save the universe or whatever, may have been successful at the time but it drastically altered the audience of the show (as evidence with the merchandise focusing on kids products during Matt Smith times, whereas David Tennant merchandise was a mix of kids and teens), and now with Peter Capaldi attempting to be a more "serious" doctor that affect has shown, teens/adults havent watched it since David and now the kids are turning their back on it, resulting in this lack of success, it literally doesnt have an audience anymore
It needs to take a break and comeback strong again with a focused target audience and good actors

I don't know what show you watched during Matt Smiths run, but the story arcs and plots were more complex than RTD.
Series 6 alone was one of the most adult and complex seasons we've had with story lines and arcs.
Especially with the adult humor and references that River song brought to the show.
While there was some "magic" and "fairytale" feels to the show, the show wasn't childish. There were a few episodes that were more catered to kids, but that's the same for RTD era as well.

I agree with this. The whole show is ever so slightly cheaper than when it began, and they're running out of storylines and rehashing ones from before. It's just pandering to children and their tumblr fanbase.
And in response to Matt Smith making the series more popular, David Tennant left in 2009/10 when the digital era was just kicking off. Of course Doctor Who would be more global now when online interest has soared since the last decade.

Not you using the Mirror as a source ![rip](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/rip_zpsec10ede9.gif) They'll say anything to get clicks. I really doubt they want to replace Capaldi because he's bringing down popularity, otherwise the length of his run wouldn't be the same as Tennant and Smith's. Capaldi signed a contract for series 10 and he probably wants to quit after that, is all.

Dude, the whole franchise's revenue doubled within one year, DVD sales doubled and iTunes and other digital sales doubled and Matt broke the US market which Tennant didn't.
Ratings became internationally high as well, when they used to be isolated to the UK and Australia.
You can't tell it was because of the digital era ![rip](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/rip_zpsec10ede9.gif) it was the digital era that brought high US ratings and revenue? And doubled dvd sales? ![rip](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/rip_zpsec10ede9.gif)

It is. And he's doing an amazing job when you consider the writing.
Steven has a whole YEAR AND A HALF to work on a script, he better get this right.
