But generally the idea that parents love and won't harm their children is a myth. Parents hurt their children in all kinds of ways willingly.

. "If you don't listen you must feel" was the motto my parents had with me growing up. I really think it's a generational thing. My parents spanked me, they got spanked and I'm sure my grandparents did too. It's done as a way to get the message across that you shouldn't do whatever reckless behaviour you did to get the whopping in the first place. Of course there are variables to it as with everything, but I do think it's effective. A lot of the stupid **** I did as a kid I deserved the spankings and you better believe I never repeated those things I got spanked for.

I don't see where race comes into play here. The majority of white parents I know "whoop" or spank their children as a form of discipline.
