SKY FERREIRA
I Will - EP
September 16, 2013
Quote:
Rolling Stone described Sky Ferreira's music as "grunge-pop…with its sneering brashness underscored by the heroin chic-meets-haute horror video." Ferreira splits her time among four cities—Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris—writing and recording her long-awaited debut album with Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen. On September 16, Capitol Records will release the first EP from these recording sessions, titled I Will. The EP will be accompanied by a video by longtime Sky Ferreira collaborator Grant Singer. Their short film together, IRL, premiered at the Cannes Short Film Corner. In addition, the release of I Will will be supported by an international live tour, taking in major cities across the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany. Ferreira's debut album is expected to be released in early 2014.

Why her debut album (then titled "I Will") was delayed?
Quote:
It was going to come out earlier but I had the chance to work with some people who weren’t originally available. I just didn’t have the right managers. They weren’t bad they just didn’t understand what I wanted to do. I’ve been doing this for five years and still haven’t released a [full length] album. So it has to be top quality and I have to feel satisfied. Because I didn’t wait this long to not be satisfied.

I just thought I could make really crappy album or an amazing one, so it's just about working with the right people. There's some stuff on the album that people aren't gonna expect from me.
|
Quote:
"It wasn't delayed or anything," Ferreira, who was first signed to a record deal at the age of 17, tells Billboard about her debut LP. "The mixes were getting rushed, and it wasn't as good as it could be. I feel like I've waited so long that I need to be satisfied with it, and the quality of it needs to be up there… I am not a fan of things being delayed, but I thought this one actually was for the best."
Ferreira says that "I almost feel like I have the second-album pressure for my first album," but is embracing that pressure after years of toiling away in what she lovingly refers to as "record label hell."
|
Quote:
"I could release the [full-length] album in September and just have it come out and nothing really properly set up," she admitted. Instead, Ferreira chose to wait until next year to release her full-length LP, largely because she had the last-minute opportunity to work with certain people that she "couldn't believe had the time to do it." She declined to tell us who, but seeing as she's already worked with the likes of Garbage's Shirley Manson and iconic songwriter Linda Perry, chances are the collaborators are significant. "It was an opportunity I could not miss."
Ferreira said her full-length album has "more electronic stuff" than in the past and is indicative of her ever-evolving musical style. "I feel like I'm in between [pop and indie]," she offered. "I'm in a very hazy place. But I think it's a good thing. It's bought me more time to try and discover myself."
|
Is there a title for the upcoming debut album?
Quote:
Well, I change my album titles like I change my underwear. So not yet.
|
Why Sky looks scared, nervous or cries during her live shows?
Quote:
"With me, performing isn't secondary, but I would say it doesn't come as naturally as writing or singing," Ferreira admits. "I get really anxious about performing, to be honest. I have really bad stage fright. It's only happened in the past few years, as I got older, for some reason."
Part of Ferreira's problem are the memories of performing during her teenage years: she recalls popping up on European television shows, being asked to sing to a backing track, and not having any idea how to beguile an audience. "There would be things written about me that I could not handle," she says. "That kind of traumatized me when it comes to playing live. I'm putting myself out there, so it's a very vulnerable thing for me."
|
What about Sky's upcoming horror movie?
Quote:
For Ferreira, such self-discovery also includes venturing into acting roles—her most recent being that of a Columbia University student caught in a cannibalistic nightmare in the upcoming Eli Roth-directed film, The Green Inferno. "The [character] I play is so the opposite of me," she says of her character in the film, Kaycee. To prepare for the film, which was shot in the Peruvian Amazon, Ferreira spent two weeks on Columbia’s campus in New York City. "It was different," she said of the experience. "[The Columbia students] dress a certain way I wouldn't dress."

You're Not The One!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only about a month late though. It honestly could have been a summer smash. As big as I Love It/Come & Get It was.
I was mad for some time about her release schedule but I'm over it now. As long as she keeps giving us SOMETHING.

This is from a recent interview with pitchfork. It looks like she's making much more and better "quality" songs with new producers that weren't available before.:0
When is your debut full-length coming out?
I have an EP coming out in September and the full length is coming out end of the year or maybe early 2014.
Who did you work with that you’re excited about?
I can’t really say but I can tell you some of the influences. It’s kind of like…Air.
Are you heading in a more atmospheric direction?
A little bit, yeah. I listen to a lot of Harmonia, John Cale and Mark Fry and stuff. I kind of wanted to make it like Suicide but with pop hooks. There are a lot of influences that I don’t think people expect, and it [comes from] what I personally listen to.
Is there a title yet?
Well, I change my album titles like I change my underwear. So not yet.

September? I feel like Ghost was so long ago.
This album is gonna take so long to release and won't even last that long sales wise.
I want it bad but let's get it over with already.

At least she's admiting that she keeps changing the title a lot hahaha.
I'm so excited about the debut album, it looks like all the songs she has been performing live are going to be on the I Will - EP while the debut album will be full of new tracks.
Maybe she's going to take EIE and YNTO out of the album tracklist, I hope so, I just want more and more new tracks. Unless EIE and YNTO are considered the "lead" singles for the album... I don't know... let's see what happens after this EP gets released.
BRING IT ON SKY
