People wonder why we all look different (most of us uglier) when using the iPhone (or any smartphone, I guess) front camera - the main reason is lens distortion.
The lens you use in a camera is the most important thing and picking a bad lens for a selfie can change the way you appear -
dramatically.

Notice how they look different in every photo? This is most evident in the 3rd set of photos. Choosing the correct camera (lens) is very important if you want your selfie to turn out great. Experts recommend a 70mm lens for the best selfie results.
The iPhone camera lens (especially front camera) is kinda crappy, so don't worry if you look a lot uglier when using it for selfies. The front camera selfies are not a clear representation of how other people see you - the mirror is the closest thing you can find to that.
