ATRL knows next to nothing about music before 2008 so perhaps there's no point in asking this, but I'm just curious because I've seen a lot of contradicting statements myself.
A real legend of music is someone who has made an inedible mark in music and helped further the art form. Success alone is not enough. You must be an essential artist.
Does Tony Bennett REALLY fit into that category? What is he apart from a covers singer that has lasted an extraordinarily long time due to smart decisions, great branding and sheer luck? I am totally willing to be educated on the subject, but I hope people can back it up. I'm honestly looking to know WHY this man is called a legend by some, and not by others.
EDIT: I know that the media and the industry present him as a legend. But what I'm asking here is if he fits into the category of a real legend, if he DESERVES to be considered one. What has he contributed to music? To the ART FORM? Which is what a legend should contribute towards. There have been plenty of groundbreaking jazz artists. How is he one of them?
EDIT 2: We appear to have arrived at a conclusion! He is a "legend" due to his age and longevity but he is essentially a glorified covers artist who has not contributed anything meaningful to music and is respected because of his longevity, not his work.
Thanks for playing!
