Is it true that in the US the best selling album of the year is backdated to October of the previous year(so its oct2011-oct2012)??
If so Adele must already have best selling album of the year in the bag(US) because she sold TONS at the tail end of 2011 in the US.

NO only Billboard uses sales form December till November for their year end charts.
Soundscan reports is for standard calendar year, and they are usually used for referring year end sales totals.

Now 41 becomes the first 2012 release to sell over half a million this week - it's well ahead of where Now 37, the equivalent 2011 release was this time last year. Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" moves into the top 10, up 6 places. That takes the number of 2012 releases in the top 10 to 4, level with the number of 2011 released albums.
One Direction's "Up All Night" is the new BB200 #1 this week, and sells enough to debut at #20 on this list. Guns N'Roses' "Greatest Hits" is a new entry at #36 (also up 16-4 on YTD catalog). It sold over 84,000 this week, many of them for 25 cents through AmazonMP3 and Google Play. The soundtrack album to Project X is the only other new entry at #94. Gotye (#27), Tyga (#34) & Fun. (#35) all move up to new peaks this week.
The soundtrack to "Hunger Games" is expected to debut at #1 on next week's BB200, and should sell enough to get a top 30 debut here.
