2016 had to be the one of the most awful years ever for me and the world:
-We had to witness Trump getting elected
-My first roommate was a druggie
-School sucked
-Stuff happened etc
And music hasn't been very cool and interesting. Last year I liked a lot of mainstream stuff and Pitchfork'd stuff like Carly, Sufjan, Father John Misty etc. but this year it just sucks.
Anyhow, I plan to do a countdown with the Best 100 Songs of the Year. Unlike previous years, this time I will just rank the songs. Before I made a weekly chart and did some arithmetic to rank them but I am at a point of my life where it's whatever!
Won't start until after exams but I wanna reserve the thread XD
Rihanna is her sexy self in this track from ANTI. Although Kiss It Better is pop perfection, it really has little replay value.
115. CARLY RAE JEPSEN-"STORE"
Carly's innocent self can transform the most mundane of situations into a tender moment. That's her strength--and it shows in Store.
114. NATHANIEL RATLIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS-"S.O.B."
Sometimes it feels like all we do is bring the past sounds back. The result is tracks that are good but feel out of place.
113. ARIANA GRANDE-"DANGEROUS WOMAN"
Ariana is not particularly dangerous, but Max Martin rarely misses a melody. Dangerous Woman gets stuck in your head, but it's not a song you crave for.
112. THE HEAD AND THE HEART-"LIBRARY MAGIC"
I went back to 2012, except that instead of Mumford I obsessed over The Head and The Heart, whose latest album was compared to Fletwood Mac. I like the serene tone of this track.
111. GREEN DAY-"BANG BANG"
As far as "active" rock, it won't get better than this in this countdown. Good song with little replay value.
110. BRITNEY SPEARS-"DO YOU WANNA COME OVER?"
Britney's team knows her audience well. I particularly like the voices in the background.
109. DRAKE FEATURING RIHANNA-"TOO GOOD"
Not a fan of Drake but even I can admit this knocks.
108. ARIANA GRANDE-"GREEDY"
Greedy should have been what Uptown Funk was. I have hopes for its release and promotion.
107. TOVE LO FEATURING WIZ KHALIFA-"INFLUENCE"
Lady Wood's first promo single is the perfect opener for one of the best pop albums of the year.
106. KALEO-"ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS"
Bon Iver who? This cheap Icelandic imitation of their style is better.
105. THE LUMINEERS-"CLEOPATRA"
I was surprised that The Lumineers' sophomore album was not good. It tends to happen with popular alt radio bands that their genius goes away soon. Cleopatra was one of the most decent--and less folkish--cuts from its parent album.
104. BASTILLE-"GOOD GRIEF"
Ah, what a disappointment Bastille was this year. A long, boring album and a single that was cute for a week at most. Nice video though!
103. GROUPLOVE-"WELCOME TO YOUR LIFE"
I used to enjoy Grouplove more, but from this track I get the feeling they're just putting out old songs. I can't detect a single change from what they did in the past.
102. MØ-"DRUM"
The Danish Girl put out another catchy pop song--but one that is particularly weak all things considered.
101. LADY GAGA-"PERFECT ILLUSION"
Props to Gaga for trying new sounds and looks. That's all, really. Joanne will not appear in the rest of the chart, what a useless, unnecessary era.
Love On The Brain feels like something you've already heard but can't quite figure out where. It just feels universal.
099. CALVIN HARRIS-"MY WAY"
Ah, drag the snake Calvin.
098. CAPITAL CITIES-"VOWELS"
If you haven't heard of CC since Safe & Sound, let me tell you that this is a solid pop song.
097. JANE ZHANG FEATURING TIMBALAND-"DUST MY SHOULDERS OFF"
Although Miss Zhang used tricks to get some iTunes exposure in the US, her song and video are legit and very well-done. Could she be the first Asian girl to leave a mark in American pop music this era?
096. LA FEMME-"OÙ VA LE MONDE?"
I just like French stuff that is absurd, okay?
095. BISHOP BRIGGS-"WILD HORSES"
Briggs' vocals and a quirky production make this song a jam
