22. Lady Gaga - 'ARTPOP'

SYNOPSIS. With her third full-length project (arguably her fourth album overall), Lady Gaga returns to form after a rocky era with 2011's 'Born This Way'. The album is a fusion of pop, dance, and R&B with some urban flavor thanks to collaborations with R. Kelly, T.I., Twista, and Too $hort. Although the lyrical and visual content still leaves listeners on edge (see Born This Way) the album is diverse enough to offer something for everyone, while remaining a cohesive effort. The album may not catapult LG back to her 'The Fame' heights, but it is a step in the right direction for artistic growth.

21. Katy Perry - 'PRISM'

SYNOPSIS. Coming off a whirlwind few years of promoting the sweet tooth 'Teenage Dream', Katy Perry continues on her quest to expand her brand with 'PRISM', her third studio release. The album was clearly crafted to be safe, but following in the vein of 'Teenage Dream' is actually more of a risk. Does lightning strike the same place twice? The album provides opportunity for plenty of skepticism with its abundance of generic tracks and cliche lyrics, but its cohesiveness and catchiness is still enough to lure listeners back in. Like a little kid with candy, it is hard to avoid the lure of something so catchy and so addicting. I just wish someone with the platform to churn out number ones like the Wonka factory would try to push the boundaries and release something experimental and expressive. Despite the too-perfect recipe, 'PRISM' prevails as a solid batch of ear candy.

Oh, that title is such a burn.

I think that ARTPOP is fatally flawed, but the moments where it shines are among Gaga's finest moments. There just were not enough of them, really.

20. Britney Spears - 'Britney Jean'

SYNOPSIS. 'Britney Jean' is the eighth studio album by America's sweetheart, but is she the crowd favorite anymore? This is Spears's second self-titled release, but I can't help but wonder why this choice was made. Clearly Spears wanted to take the album in a personal direction, as songs like Passenger and Brightest Morning Star indicate. However, executive producer will.i.am seems to have steered this album the 'Femme Fatale' route, her previous release which showed no artistic growth. There seems to be a battle behind the scenes as to which Britney will prevail on the album, but the public has taken its stance, which is not looking good for her. As a woman entering her 30s, it may be time for her to take back full creative control and put out the album that could potentially win her accolades. Regardless, Spears is prepping for her Piece of Me residency in Las Vegas, which is steaming with positive reviews and keeping her brand thriving.
