- Sinterklaas is the same as Christmas here, it's a childhood memory and major nostalgic throwback and 'feelgood' time, people feel personally tied to the event and calling it wrong and racist (which it undoubtly is) hurts them on a very personal level.
- Xenophobia, people feel as though this is a typical Dutch tradition that only started to get criticised when foreigners came into the country and I've heard multiple people literally say that 'they're trying to erase our culture'.
It's basically one big bowl of racism, xenophobia, denial, patriotism and ignorance.
