You could probably count the number of producers on one hand (two, two-and-a-half tops) that are hotter right now than Diplo. His Major Lazer single “Pon de Floor” provided the hook for roughly one out of every four hip-hop singles released last year, and he just helmed one of the first great ballads of 2012 in Usher’s “Climax.” But the hit that he really made his name on in the mainstream was Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now,” one of the biggest and best R&B jams of last year. Now, the superstar producer—big enough to merit his own Rolling Stone profile—has some choice words for the guy who helped put him on the map. From that RS interview:
Quote:
‘I’m not a circuit-court judge or anything,’ he says. ‘Chris Brown served his sentence. What else can you do? I do think he’s an asshole – like, at the Grammys, he could have been more graceful. But he’s an artist. He’s good at what he does.’

You could probably accuse Diplo of being slightly ungrateful to sell out his old collaborator like that—but then again, the song did do as much to resurrect Chris Brown’s career as it did to take Diplo’s to that next level, and the latter’s contributions were probably way more consequential to the success of the song than the former. Still, it’s surprising to see the guy burning bridges like that—especially when in the very next paragraph he calls ex-girlfriend (!) M.I.A. “really abusive” and refers to her Madonna collab “Give Me All Your Luvin’” “kind of lame” and “such a flop.” Appreciate the candor, Dip, but here’s hoping for your sake that the roll you’re on continues—otherwise you might not have too many people around to help you on the way back down.
