News: Hispanic students BANNED by Principal from speaking Spanish

“She was like no speaking Spanish,” eighth-grader Yedhany Gallegos recalled. “I was like that’s my first language. She said, well you can get out.”

Hempstead ISD spokesperson Laurie Bettis said in a statement that Lacey had been placed on leave while the district investigated the charges.

The United States has no official language and it is not the problem of the children that more teachers do not accommodate for what is likely the second most widely spoken language in the US.

Yeah but literally everything is in English and if you want to be successful you have to know English.

The kids shouldn't be talking in class anyway, so the teacher could just tell them to shut up. Do you think that in the middle of class kids are just shouting across the room answers in Spanish?

That doesn't mean you have to use only English in the public school system for simple conversation.

If a student is told to write something or present a project in English, that's one thing - it's quite another to ban all talk in Spanish outright.

Do they have to? I hate how these people move to the US without a citizenship or even a legal situation to begin with and they feel like they get to make choices. And I'm hispanic myself (sadly) so you guys don't even pull the racist card on me.

It's not like the kids were speaking Spanish all day. They were having personal conversations with their friends that don't affect their learning at all. The Principal can SEETHE though.
