Lady Gaga was arguably the biggest pop star in the world at that point, coming off the heels of her successful The Fame era and a huge single with Bad Romance. With Telephone, she released a hyped mini-movie music video laden with product placement ranging from Virgin Mobile to Miracle Whip to Diet Coke and had publicity in the media to hype up the video. The song also featured Beyonce, the biggest female artist of the 2000s decade.
The only major pop girl with a competing single at the time was Rihanna, who had released Rude Boy as the third single from her acclaimed Rated R album. The song had a low-budget green screen video edited with colorful effects.
As we all know, the rest is history. Rude Boy triumphed over the combined star power of Lady Gaga and Beyonce and went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 for 5 weeks while Telephone stalled at #3.
How did Rihanna manage this??? Why did Rude Boy overshadow Telephone, which was supposed to be one of the biggest pop culture moments of 2010???

Isn't Rude Boy one of least-selling #1 hits of all time too?

Telephone had it's own thing going on with the video and being overshadowed by Bad Romance. It definitely didn't perform as well as I thought it personally would. Whatever though, Rude Boy was a bop, as was Telephone. I'm glad they graced the top 5 together. You other bitches can stay mad and try to fight over something that isn't even worth arguing over.
