I don't get why people are shocked. It was the 10th best selling song of 2014 and was a hit in the US. Do most of you live on ATRL where only female American pop stars exist?

Not really. It was a huge worldwide hit and was the 10th best selling song of 2014. It sold over 8 million copies last year and most of those sales did not come from South America.
Also, most Spanish-language artists have low Youtube views except a select few like Enrique, Shakira, Nicky Jam, J Balvin, Don Omar and Daddy Yankee so that explanation doesn't make sense.
