Not only does he purposely make sure he's lyrics are 100% not gay, he even changes lyrics to other people's songs to be straight like he did with this Whitney Houston cover.
"There's a boy I know / He's the one I dream of" became "Oh it's you I know, you're the one I dream of." "How will I know if he really loves me?" became "How will I know if you really love me?"
In advice to a fan struggling with his sexuality
Quote:
"I would say just be yourself. Just be yourself. And don't make it an issue, do you know what I mean? If others around you are making it an issue, I understand, fight for your rights of course. But also let's make it a normality. To make it equal we need to kind of act equal, if you get what I mean.
Yet he doesn't seem to act equal. Men usually sing about how beautifull women are, describe sex with women, and are very graphic and sexual. Sam cowers in the corner, afraid to be too gay for straight people.
On his music:
Quote:
I've made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody— whether it's a guy, a female or a goat—and everybody can relate to that. I'm not in this industry to talk about my personal life unless it's in a musical form.
On coming out
Quote:
Coming out, Smith says, "felt great. But I had to be careful — I want my music to be sung by absolutely everyone, just like I listen to straight people every day of my life, and I'm not straight. I've got to have faith in mankind that that can happen."
Which makes no sense to me because the straight people he listens to make their sexuality very clear and even though he can't relate he sings along regardless. Apparently it would be ridiculous to ask them to do the same though?
My point is, is sam smith ashamed of his sexuality? His new video has a straight couple in it as well so it seems like he's trying pretty hard to dissociate himself with gays.
I don't think so. I think he just wants his music to be universally appealing, and he doesn't want to be turned into some sort of outspoken advocate or figurehead for the gay community. It's an understandable approach.
Ashamed? I don't think so
Is Capitol telling him to "tone down" his gayness? Probably
I'd understand if he were but the things he's been saying make it seem like he truly believes the words coming out his mouth. He was recently going on and on about how brave he (it's in the OP article) but I mean what he's doing isn't brave at all.
The only weird part I find is him changing the lyrics to the Whitney cover.
It's his music, he can write it whatever way he wants to.
I think that everyone should make their songs gender neutral.
Um, no. Sam smith himself said that in order to make being gay equal we have to treat it as equal. Straights openly sing about their love of the opposite gender and sam smith doesn't. Is that equal?

So basically he's a singer that happens to be gay but doesn't sing about it in his music and doesn't represent gays in anyway. What's the difference between him and Queen Latifah or (according to ATRL) Taylor swift?
His gender neutral songs are a good start, he may not be telling the world that he has been in love with a man through his lyrics but at least there is an openly gay musician who is achieving mainstream success and being embraced. He seems very shy and maybe he is ashamed.. It cant be easy being in the spotlight and being openly gay. He has a lot of pressure, im sure his management makes him tone everything down to appeal to a bigger audience. Straight people are in charge, they have all the power over queer people.
