Why is there not a thread for them? I just did a post on them on MartianLeaks and was coming to share it. Don't tell me I'm the only fan!
Anywho, the post is below.
Quote:
Everyone knows Grey Kurstin right? He's a mega producer who's worked with Lily Allen (the entire It's Not Me, It's You album), Britney Spears ("Rock Me In"), Kelly Clarkson ("What Doesn't Kill You [Stronger]", "Dark Side"), Marina and the Diamonds ("Starring Role," "Sex Yeah") and Ke$ha ("Animal") along with countless others. Well, he's in a band. More than one, actually, but only one that I care about. It's a cutesy indie pop duo (the other half being a favorite female solo artist, Inara George) who specializes in space-age, candy shop pop. Their music stands out because it's trendy, almost the same way that hipsters are trendy. It's different on purpose. They don't make music to chart. They don't make music to sell records. The make music for the fan base that has proven faithful since their humble beginnings as a duo. Since, they've sort of exploded on the indie scene and have become quite popular, being featured in movies like Sex & The City and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Their music is defined by the retro, while also futuristic, feel and sweet sound. Inara George's luscious vocals are the perfect compliment to Greg Kurstin's bubblegum productions. "Polite Dance Song" (below) is the best indicator of their sound for anyone who has never heart of them. It almost doesn't matter what she howls in the music. In this song she sings, "Would you be nasty with me? Do you like dancing with me?" and it comes across completely innocent.
It's the sweetness that stands out most in the music. Take their cover of Rihanna's 2007 smash hit, "Don't Stop the Music" completely changes the mood, changing it from a sultry dance anthem to a smooth and subtly sensual ballad. There is not other artist I can think of off the top of my head who would have been able to breathe such unique life into this song.
The duo actually became quite known for their covers and even shelled out a tribute album in honor of Hall & Oates, an album they promised would be the first of many tribute albums to come! Hall & Oats is known for their lyrics and smooth R&B singing style and instrumentation, but still the Bird and the Bee were able to reconstruct each song just enough to make it their own and not take too much away from the original. Check out their remake of "Maneater" below.
...still, their original music is the most desired content from the band. Their catalog is filled with critically acclaimed charm. The first album, which was self titled, even earned positive reviews from Blender and Rolling Stone, despite those magazines often being tough on pop music. My favorite track from the first album would be a toss up between the bass heavy "Because" or the kitschy "****ing Boyfriend" Check them out below.
"Because"
"****ing Boyfriend"
I really love the Bird and the Bee. Pop stars aside, I love them almost as much as I do Regina Spektor, and if you've been paying attention to the blog lately, I can't get enough Regina! Their music is genuine, not over processed or transparent. Hopefully you'll like them! If you do, they offer up lots of freebies on their official website or you can of course check them out on iTunes.
