From 1990-2000 she topped the chart at least once per year, but since then she has added just 3 #1s to her tally. At just 23 Rihanna currently has 10 #1s. After topping the chart four times last year and once this year is it inevitable that she will break this record? Discuss.

Rihanna's singles used to as well, and now they don't anymore. And we all saw how it went with Mariah. It's unpredictable really, Katy could lose her power to get #1s by the time her next album comes along, and so might Rihanna, but she has already proven that she has good staying power so I'd think her odds are better.

Katy is still selling strongly because she's at an earlier stage in her career, she's the current digital queen. Rihanna was when GGGB was out.

The further along your career you are, the less singles you're going to sell. Look at the charts, it reflects that.

#1s are not the bee all and end all, but they do mean something and should not be written off so easily. The Beatles, Elvis and Mariah have had the most #1s and they are all legends. The music industry is all about impact and sales. You don't hear of any flops being considered legends.
