Gaga clocks the tea in Rolling Stone
Quote:
"Is it that you believe that I am attention-seeking or shock for shock's sake, or is it just that it's been a long time since someone has embraced the art form the way that I have? Perhaps it's been a couple of decades since there's been an artist that's been as vocal about culture, religion, human rights, politics. I'm so passionate about what I do, every bass line, every EQ. Why is it that you don't want more from the artist, why is it that you expect so little, so when I give and give, you assume it's narcissistic?"

The new issue of Rolling Stone, on stands and in the digital archive on May 27th, includes an in-depth cover story of Lady Gaga by writer Brian Hiatt, who was given intimate, fly-on-the wall access to the pop superstar as she played the final dates of her Monster Ball Tour and put the finishing touches on her new album Born This Way. "When I am not onstage I feel dead," she says. "Whether that is healthy or not to you, or healthy or not to anyone, or a doctor, is really of no concern to me. I don't feel alive unless I'm performing, and that's just the way I was born."
In the story, Gaga reveals that she's recently derived a lot of inspiration from an unlikely source: Rocky IV. "My favorite part is when Apollo's ex-trainer says to Rocky, 'He is not a machine. He's a man. Cut him, and once he feels his own blood, he will fear you.' I know it sounds crazy, but I was thinking about the machine of the music industry. I started to think about how I have to make the music industry bleed to remind it that it's human, it's not a machine."
Other highlights:
• When Gaga first blew up in early 2009, people had a hard time accepting her outrageous wardrobe and public persona. "Being myself in public was very difficult," she says. "I was being poked and probed and people would actually touch me and touch my clothes and be like, 'What the **** is that,' just so awful. It was like I was being bullied by music lovers, because they couldn't possibly believe that I was genuine."
• Gaga was also teased mercilessly in high school. "Being teased for being ugly, having a big nose, being annoying," she says. “'Your laugh is funny, you're weird, why do you always sing, why are you so into theater, why do you do your make-up like that?’ . . . I used to be called a ****, be called this, be called that, I didn't even want to go to school sometimes."
• While offstage, she's taken to wearing lots of clothing given to her by fans. "We have this umbilical cord that I don't want to cut, ever," she says. "I don't feel that they suck me dry. It would be so mean, wouldn't it, to say, 'For the next month, I'm going to cut myself off from my fans so I can be a person.' What does that mean? They are part of my person, they are so much of my person. They're at least 50 percent, if not more."
• She is annoyed at the suggestion by some critics that her main goal is to attract attention. "I have attention," she says, and begins addressing her critics directly.

The first quote is so damn arrogant. I despise people who praise themselves like that. It's just sad and it humiliates their own accomplishments.

I wish she would admit to being a narcissist though. Her defensive behavior makes it all look humorless.

Then would you mind enlightening us which current mainstream artists are as vocal about culture, religion, politics, etc. as her?

Well she IS attention seeking. She can't deny that!
And a lot of her actions are done just for shock'sake. So I don't really understand why she is saying that.

Pretty much this. She never really comes off as appearing sincere and that's the public's biggest issue with her. I say this not to hate but to say that's pretty much it. Yes it would be inspiring if it didn't seem like she was trying to be pretentious. A lot of that arrogance is seen by the public in forms of Kanye, Justin and Christina and it bears a mark in how the public views them. If she is upset with it then she should make actions to change that stereotype and thus change the way people perceive her if she really doesn't want to come across as 'shocking' people for the sake of shock value. For instance P!nk has a similar outsiders image around her and yet she isn't a shock artist at all. She is who she is and she doesn't aim for attention and often goes under the radar. Gaga likes to shock people. There is no need for her to argue that she does what she does in order to shock people into paying attention to her. I don't understand why she doesn't just own that.

What does this even mean? She is apart of the music industry. She is apart of this monstrous machine that she is 'fighting against'. Does she not see that she is apart of the big bad corporate America. This makes people think she has completely lost the plot man. I think one of the things I dislike about her is this notion that she is 'different' from the mainstream. Her main goals in pop music are the same as her peers. Just because she dresses it up in a different way doesn't really make her special or different. There all pop songs going for adds on radio stations and being sent to iTunes every Tuesday for sale at the same $1.29 prices.

That's not the point. The thing is, even if you're the best at what you do, you should remain humble, instead of bragging about yourself. It's called respect for your contemporaries.
At the end of the day, passion and artistry are subjective and it's not Gaga's duty to declare the best artist in decades. Let the public decide that.

She's been going down hill. I like her but it's decreasing...

I can't believe her stans believe in everything she says.
And I remember people saying 'Gaga doesn't care about money, she cares about entertaining her fans'...
Whatever my ass. Most of her fans a shallow and narrow-minded. It makes me puke.

Did you not read the interview sis? She basically spent two long sentences praising herself. She stated that no one has approached art like her in decades. In other words she dissed everyone from the 90s-00s.

And you know the font was done for attention how...? You don't. Stop making inferences based on nothing.
Gaga is a performance artist. If you don't know what that is here is a lovely Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_art

I know it's too early for her to go on and off about "revolutionizing" the music industry but shouldn't we acknowledge what GaGa has accomplished for the past 3-4 years? Also, what's the point of projecting false humility when she can easily back up her ego + She's not disrespecting her peers when she's only stating the truth. I agree with the second paragraph though.
