Ultimate K-Pop Boy Band Rate » The winner is....
Welcome to the Ultimate K-Pop Boy Band Rate! This rate includes some of the biggest and most influential boy bands in
K-Pop history, each hand-picked by the K-Pop fans of ATRL. From legendary veterans (TVXQ!, Super Junior, BIGBANG)
to the most prolific figures to come from K-Pop's golden era (SHINee, 2PM, BEAST) to this decade's representative
groups (INFINITE, Block B, B.A.P, EXO) and the rising stars of a new generation (NU'EST, VIXX, BTS, GOT7); this rate
covers it all. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the music!
BACKGROUND
2PM debuted in 2008 under JYP Entertainment with the song 10 Out of 10, a song which brought the group attention for their strong hip-hop concept. In the spring of 2009 the group made their first comeback with Again & Again, the song proved to be extremely successful, becoming the group's first #1 win. The second half of the year brought controversy but the group proved their staying power with the release of Hearbeat, another massive #1 hit single. 2PM continued their streak of hit singles with the releases of Without U, I'll Be Back and Hands Up - two of which peaked at #1 on the Gaon chart (and all of which took home #1 trophies on music shows). After a year of absence from the Korean music scene, the group made a triumphant return in 2013; promoting their double title tracks Comeback When You Hear This Song and A.D.T.O.Y., with two strongly contrasting concepts. While the group has enjoyed great popularity overseas (particularly in Japan), the group has managed to maintain their success in Korea, with nearly all of their comebacks peaking within the top 10, including 2014's Go Crazy! and 2015's My House. With almost a decade of success, 2PM has made their mark as one of the most successful and influential Korean acts of all time.
B.A.P debuted in 2012 as the first boy group under TS Entertainment. The group made a huge splash in their debut year, their popularity growing with each comeback. By the end of the year the group managed to reach the top 20 of the Gaon chart with their repackage single Crash. Their success continued in 2013 as the group put out moderate hits Rain Sound and One Shot - both top 20 hits. However, they saw their greatest success in 2014 with the release of 1004 (Angel) alongside their first full length album, First Sensibility. The song was their first top 10 hit and their first #1 trophy. The group was unable to enjoy their success for long as they filed a lawsuit against their company - citing unfair conditions and profit distribution - halting all of the group's activities. In 2015 B.A.P and TS managed to reach a settlement and the group returned with Young, Wild & Free towards the end of the year and Feel So Good at the start of 2016. B.A.P is known for their powerful rock concept and aggressive visual performances, giving them an edge against their competition.
BEAST (formerly, B2ST) debuted in 2009 under Cube Entertainment with the song Bad Girl, which performed moderately. The group returned at the start of 2010 with the track Shock, which made it to the top 3 on Gaon and won the group their first #1 win on M! Countdown, they wrapped up the year with two other top 10 hit singles Breath and Beautiful (both of which took home #1 wins on music shows). BEAST continued with arguably the most successful period of their career in 2011-12, starting with their biggest selling songs On Rainy Days and Fiction (both of which were multi-million sellers) in 2011 and a series of successful singles from their fifth mini album, Midnight Sun, including Midnight and Beautiful Night. This period of success is further accentuated by the group's two consecutive daesang awards at the MelOn Music Awards. The group has continued to maintain a steady streak of hits, with 13 consecutive top 5 charting singles on Gaon from 2011-15, including 2013's Shadow, 2014's Good Luck & 12:30 and 2015's YeY. BEAST has proved to be one of the most digitally successful boy groups in K-Pop history, racking up hit after hit after hit with each comeback, captivating the public with their unique blend of dance and R&B.
BIGBANG made their official debut in 2006 under YG Entertainment and made a massively successful breakthrough in 2007 with the release of Lies and follow-up comeback single Last Farewell three months later. In 2008 the group continued their domination of the music charts with the release of Haru Haru, a collaboration with the popular Japanese producer DAISHI DANCE. Following the release of their second full length Korean album, Remember, the group turned towards Japanese promotions as well as solo and unit work before making an explosive return in 2011 with the hugely successful comeback single Tonight. BIGBANG later repackaged their comeback album and promoted a new track, Love Song, which proved to be another hit for them. They finished off the year by taking home the award for Best Worldwide Act at the MTV European Music Awards. 2012 proved to be another prolific year for the group as they tackled promotions for a handful of successful tracks including Blue, Fantastic Baby and Monster. Fantastic Baby became their strongest selling single of the Gaon era, their biggest selling song in Japan and the most-viewed video by a Korean boy group. Once again, the group took time off to focus on touring as well as solo and unit work before returning in 2015 with a series of single albums known as the MADE project. The project proved to be another successful endeavor for the group as they ended the year with 4 #1 singles, 6 million-sellers, the #1 song on the Gaon year-end chart, over 20 music show wins and several daesang awards. As one of the longest lasting Korean boy groups and successful boy groups of all time, BIGBANG has consistently proven both their staying and selling power. Successfully tackling a multitude of genres and performance styles, the group has been able to stay relevant to a worldwide audience for over 10 years.
Block B made their debut in 2011 with the track Freeze! and comeback single Tell Them, to a lukewarm commercial response. However, the group started off 2012 with a bang with the release of NalinA, which managed to chart at #11 on the Gaon chart and sell over 1.8 million copies. They then followed that up with two top 10 singles, Close My Eyes and Nillili Mambo (with the latter becoming their second million selling song). However, just as they were about to blow up, the group filed a lawsuit against their agency - Stardom Entertainment - over payment disputes. The group was eventually freed and signed to Seven Seasons, finishing off the year with the releases of Be the Light and Very Good. By 2014 the group had become one of the top trending boy groups after the releases of Jackpot and Her. The latter was one of the biggest hits of the year, finishing in the top 20 of the Gaon year-end chart and garnering the group 3 music show wins. Block B's future as one of K-Pop's current reigning boy groups seems promising as they continue to rack up hit after hit (including this year's Toy), bringing the Korean hip-hop trend to forefront.
BTS made their official debut in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment with the song No More Dream. The group continued to promote subsequent comeback singles N.O, Boy In Luv, Just One Day and Danger while slowly cultivating a rabid fanbase and strong online presence. Yet, it was not until the group returned in 2015 to promote part 1 and 2 of their The Most Beautiful Moment In Life series that they exploded in popularity. Starting with the promotions for I Need U, the group was met with unprecedented success when the single debuted at #5 on the Gaon chart (besting their previous chart high of #43) and presented them with their first music show win. Two months later they continued promotions with the follow-up single Dope, a hip-hop track that managed to become a runaway viral hit - accumulating over 60 million views. Towards the end of the year BTS returned yet again to promote Run, another top 10 hit and music show winner. In mid-2016 the group wrapped up The Most Beautiful Moment In Life era with the release of the special album The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Young Forever, ending one of the biggest K-Pop eras in recent memory on a high note. As K-Pop's current top trending boy group, BTS snagging the title of one of Korea's top tier groups seems imminent.
EXO debuted in 2012 under SM Entertainment with the release of MAMA (as well as the "prologue" single releases What Is Love and History). Though their first few singles were met with lukewarm commercial response, they continued to attract fans in hoards and their 2013 comeback single Wolf managed to snag a top 10 position and win their first music show. But it was the repackage single Growl that propelled the group into superstardom. Growl peaked at #2 on the Gaon chart and swept music shows across the nation. EXO managed to collect daesang awards for Growl and XOXO, the accompanying album, a testament to their massive popularity. The group continues to conquer the charts with each passing comeback including 2014's Overdose and 2015's Call Me Baby & Love Me Right. The group has won disk daesang at the Golden Disk Awards for the last 3 years and both of their full length albums have sold over 1 million copies. Known for their unique blend of R&B and dance, the group's slick, polished and insanely catchy songs have unsurprisingly attracted a massive global fanbase - especially in China, thanks to their (former) EXO-M sub-unit. Despite controversial member changes and legal issues, the group continues to break into new markets and grow in popularity in ways no other group in recent memory has been able to.
GOT7 made their official group debut in 2014 under JYP Entertainment, making them the newest group in this rate. In their debut year they promoted three singles; Girls Girls Girls, A and Stop Stop It, all of which performed moderately on the charts. In 2015, the group released Just Right which garnered over 55 million views - indicative of their international appeal. They followed Just Right up with If You Do, their first top 10 hit on Gaon and their first music show win. GOT7 then started off 2016 with promotions for Fly, another top 10 single and managed to win 5 music show trophies. GOT7's success continues to trend upward as they win more music shows and their album sales continue to grow with each subsequent comeback thanks to their ability to attract fans with varying concepts and extremely catchy R&B-pop songs.
INFINITE debuted in mid-2010 under Woollim Entertainment with the song Come Back Again to lukewarm commercial reception. The group came back at the start of 2011 with the single BTD (Before the Dawn) which attracted a lot of attention for its music video and complicated choreography. With rising popularity, the group released Nothing's Over shortly thereafter, becoming the group's first top 40 single, peaking at #22. In mid-2011 INFINITE dropped their first full length album, Over the Top, where the title track Be Mine became their biggest success up until that point, peaking in the top 10 and becoming their first music show win on M! Countdown. The repackage single, Paradise, was just as successful - it peaked at #3 on the Gaon chart and took home #1 wins on Inkigayo and M! Countdown. In 2012 the group released, arguably, their most critically acclaimed single to date, The Chaser. The song took home #1 on several music shows and peaked within the top 10, selling over 1.5 million copies. INFINITE has since enjoyed a streak of successful comeback singles; including 2013's Man In Love & Destiny, 2014's Last Romeo & Back and 2015's Bad. INFINITE is known for their signature high energy electronic dance tracks, courtesy of Korean producers Sweetune and Rphabet, as well as their complicated choreography characterized by impressive synchronization. Enjoying consistent popularity for almost the entirety of their career, INFINITE has been acknowledged as one of the leading boy groups of the third generation of K-Pop.
NU'EST debuted in 2012 under Pledis Entertainment with the single Face, the single was highly anticipated, gaining nearly 50 million views to date. The group followed up with promotions for Action off of their mini album of the same name. At the start of 2013 the group released their highest charting single to date, Hello, peaking at #51 on the Gaon chart. The group has since promoted subsequent singles Sleep Talking, Good Bye Bye and Overcome. They have maintained a dedicated fanbase despite poor commercial response. NU'EST's electronic and dance oriented songs have kept them popular among K-Pop fans.
SHINee debuted in 2008 under SM Entertainment with the song Replay, a song that attracted a large following of dedicated fans. SHINee then followed with promotions for Love Like Oxygen off of their first full length album The SHINee World, the song took home their first #1 win on both Inkigayo and M! Countdown just months after debut. The group ended the year with the single A.MI.GO off of the repackage of their first album. SHINee released Juliette and Ring Ding Dong off of their respective second and third mini albums, both tracks took home #1 music show wins and solidified SHINee's status as hit-makers. In 2010 the group released Lucifer, which peaked at #2 on the Gaon chart and sold nearly 1.5 million copies, a follow-up repackage single Hello also attained a top 10 position. Sherlock, released in 2012, proved to be one of the group's biggest successes and creative triumphs, the song was SHINee's first Gaon #1 single and is their top selling song of the Gaon era, Sherlock also took home several #1 wins. 2013 proved to be SHINee's busiest year yet, with back-to-back comebacks and Japanese promotions. The group promoted Dream Girl, Why So Serious? and Everybody over the course of the year to varying degrees of success. Dream Girl took home 10 music show wins, peaked at #1 on the Gaon chart and sold nearly 1 million copies; Why So Serious? (promoted without Jonghyun) peaked at #15 and sold nearly 450,000 copies; Everybody peaked at #1, sold over 430,000 copies and took home six #1 music show wins. Their hard work was rewarded when they took home the artist of the year daesang at the 2013 MelOn Music Awards. The group took time off from Korean promotions to promote in Japan and tour before coming back in 2015 to promote View off of their fifth full length album Odd. View peaked at #1 on the Gaon chart and sold nearly 725,000 copies. SHINee's track record varies from soulful R&B, pulsating electronica, pop fluff, throbbing EDM and even deep house. The group has managed to tackle a multitude of concepts and sounds while staying true to their roots and maintaining fan support. With their 10 year mark fast approaching, SHINee has proven their staying power and captured the hearts of K-Pop fans worldwide.
Super Junior debuted back in 2005 under SM Entertainment with the single Twins (Knock Out), an explosive rock track. However, for their comeback in mid-2006 the group shifted gears and released the dance influenced hip-hop track U, the song took off and the group took home their first music show #1 - including a triple crown on Inkigayo. In 2007 the group returned to their rock roots with the release of Don't Don, while the single didn't win as many music shows as U, Super Junior managed to take home the artist of the year daesang at the MAMAs in 2007. The group's greatest success came in the form of the infectious dance track Sorry, Sorry released in March 2009, the song shot to the top of the charts and took home several music show wins (the album won disk daesang at the 2009 Golden Disk Awards too); follow-up single It's You also managed to score a few music show wins. In 2010 the group released Bonamana, which peaked at #8 on the Gaon chart and received 8 music show wins. 2011 saw the release of Mr. Simple and A-CHA, the former peaked at #1 on the Gaon chart and sold around 1.9 million copies, along with 11 music show wins; while the latter peaked in the top 15 and sold over 710,000 copies. The album took home disk daesang at the Golden Disk Awards, album of the year daesang at the MAMAs and daesang at the Seoul Music Awards. With the release of Sexy, Free & Single and Spy in 2012, the group continued to see success, taking home another slew of music show wins and year-end awards. After shifting focus to overseas promotion, unit & solo work and touring, the group reunited in 2014 for the release of Mamacita and 2015 for the release of Devil, which marked 10 years since debut for the group. In their 10 years together, Super Junior has managed to turn themselves into an extensive promotional juggernaut, expanding into markets all over the world and flooding the market with their various units and solo efforts in ways never seen in the K-Pop world before.
TVXQ! made their debut at the very end of 2003 under SM Entertainment with Hug, later released as a single album at the start of 2004. The single proved to have great longevity, eventually winning them their first #1 win and subsequent triple crown on Inkigayo. The release of 2005's Rising Sun solidified the group's status as one of Korea's top trending groups and the group received another triple crown on Inkigayo. 2006 proved to be a defining year for TVXQ! with the release of "O"-Jung.Ba.Hap., their popularity continuing to explode, the group managed to take home disk daesang at the Golden Disk Awards, daesang at the SBS Gayo Daejeon and daesang at the Seoul Music Awards. The group received yet another triple crown for the single on Inkigayo. TVXQ!'s popularity reached a fervent peak (in both Korea and Japan) with the release of 2008's Mirotic, which swept #1 wins across the nation's music shows, the accompanying album took home disk daesang at the Golden Disk Awards and set a new first week sales record. The next few years proved to be controversial, with the group going through member changes before returning as a duo (with only Yunho and Changmin remaining) in 2011 with the single Why? (Keep Your Head Down), which peaked at #5 on the Gaon chart. The single took home a triple crown on Inkigayo and a number of other music show wins. The duo has maintained a steady presence in Korea (while continuing their unprecedented success in Japan), releasing a number of singles including 2011's Before U Go, 2012's Catch Me & Humanoids and 2014's Something & Spellbound. TVXQ! is the oldest participating group in this rate, with millions of records sold in both their native Korea and in Japan, they are one of the most influential and successful Korean acts of all time. Currently on hiatus as they serve their mandatory military service, fans are patiently awaiting their return.
VIXX debuted in 2012 under Jellyfish Entertainment with the single Super Hero to poor commercial response, while follow-up single Rock Ur Body performed similarly. 2013's On and On performed miles better, peaking at #25 and selling over 100,000 copies. They continued to produce minor hits, Hyde and G.R.8.U, that year; before producing their first top 10 hit (and first music show win) Voodoo Doll. Eternity and Error, released in 2014, also managed to impact the top 10 (with the latter going top 5) and snag some music show wins. VIXX returned at the start of 2015 with Love Equation, which has proven to be their biggest hit to date. The song peaked at #2 on the Gaon chart and swept music show wins across the nation, including a triple crown on The Show. The group finished off the year with the released of Chained Up, which also managed to peak within the top 10. VIXX unveiled plans to release several single albums throughout 2016, starting with April's Dynamite from the Zelos single album. The single peaked at #14 on the Gaon chart and has secured a triple crown on The Show. VIXX has explored some of the most unique concepts in K-Pop and experimented with a variety of sounds, thus attracting a large, dedicated fanbase that continues to grow.
- Assign each track a score between 1 and 10; decimal point scores are accepted, but only those to the tenth place (i.e 9.5, 8.3, etc.).
- You may give an 11 to your favorite song and a 0 to your least favorite song, use them wisely!
- When assigning a decimal point score use a period (".") and not a comma (","), it's much easier to calculate scores when they're written this way.
- Be sure to double check your ballots for missing scores. A song with a missing score will be automatically given a score of 1.
- PLEASE use the PM friendly list near the end of this post!! Send your rates to me via private message, don't post them in the thread!
- Rates will be due July 15th, 2016 at 10:00PM EST. You won't want to miss out!
- Don't troll, bitches!
Near the bottom of the OP (post #3) there is a PM friendly list in a collapse tag, each song listed is hyperlinked to a YouTube
video where you can listen to the song easily.
