Alternative Songs #20 - David Bowie "The Next Day"
Welp, better get started!
David Bowie - "The Next Day" #20
David Bowie's title track lead from The Next Day is crazy, controversial, and timeless. The song sounds like it could be from the 60s, yet still retains modern appeal. The video is pure genius, too. Combining blasphemy and comedy, it just makes the song all the better.
Pop Songs #20 - Katy Perry ft. Juicy J "Dark Horse"
Katy Perry ft. Juicy J - "Dark Horse" #20
I am not a Katy Perry stan by any means. I am, however, a stan for a few of her songs. This would be one of them. Is it original? Hell no. Is it productively remarkable in any way? Nope. Why do I love it? BECAUSE IT'S A DAMN FUN SONG! Juicy's rap is fun, her chorus is super catchy and deserves to be #1 on Billboard, and the verses are ridiculously awesome. Also them dance moves of Katy's when she does it live
Kanye West ft. Justin Vernon, Chief Keef, Mike Dean (uncredited) - "Hold My Liquor" #20
(& Lorde's cover )
"Hold My Liquor" with Chief Keef and Justin Vernon is one of my favorite hip-hop songs of all time (which should give you a good indication of what I think of 2013's hip-hop output). Now let that sink inJustin Vernon of Bon Iver and Chief Keef of "I Don't Like" fameon the same song. Well Justin takes his vocal parts beautifully, and Keef owns the chorus in the most unexpected way possible. Put the rapper who portrays himself as the biggest "don't give a ****" badass in the game and have him sing a chorus about weakness, albeit with some Future-style auto-tune. Kanye's twisted ballad-like lyrics provide a great story, and the beat forces you to listen to every word he's saying. The song is beautiful, twisted, and pure genius.
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines#20
Personally, I love Robin Thicke. He's an egotistical bastard with a great voice and great influence. His soul songs stand out as some of the best blue-eyed soul I've heard, and his pop masterpiece "Give It 2 U" is a banger for life. Oh, and who can possibly forget the phenomenon that was "Blurred Lines" this past summer? Certainly one of the best soul songs to grace the Billboard Hot 100 in recent memory. Robin wanted to have fun with this album, and he succeeded!
Lana Del Ray - "Young and Beautiful" #19
I DO NOT LIKE LANA DEL RAY. But, this song bops. I first heard it somewhere on the radio and didn't like it, but after seeing The Great Gatsby, I gained some newfound appreciation for this song. The movie adds so much more meaning to the song! The chorus is perfect, regardless of how ****ing stupid the verses and bridge ( ) are, the production is nice and the chorus is amazing, all while bringing me back to the movie. I applaud Lana Del Ray on this, I just wish she would get a ghostwriter or something to make her lyrics less embarrassing.
