Discussion: The UOG Rate: The 90s! Baby Girl, Better Known as Aaliyah

In the grand tradition of my last worldwide superstar rate! Get in or be lost!

Here at ATRL, we when talk about big pop girls of the 90s, we mainly talk about the four omitted from the last rate (Madonna/Janet/Whitney/Kylie), as well as four others: two who debuted (at least in the English-speaking world/outside of freestyle clubs) in 1990 [Mariah and Celine], and two who came on like heat-seeking missiles at the tail end of the decade [Britney and Christina].

What about everyone else? These are rates for THEM.

Part one of this rate will focus on the biggest names in pop, mainstream rock and R&B - part two will catch up with the ladies of dance, alternative rock, and those that maybe only really lasted for one album.

If you're expecting to see Shania or Missy, you'll be disappointed - modern country females and female rappers will have their own ultimate rates!

What's one to do when you've decided to leave your bubblegum past behind you, and you've just been dumped by the least attractive male cast member (including the twins) of Full House? Well, if you're Alanis Morissette, you pack up your ****, head to California, and hook up with Wilson Phillips hitmaker Glen Ballard. You cleanse your soul, unleash your rage, and use his pop ear to ground it in hooks. The result? The most successful debut album of the 90s, if not of all time.

What led this charge? You oughta know the answer to that ...

Although clearly derivative of the past four years of female-fronted alternative rock, it was sweetened enough to be enjoyed by the masses. Charting in the top ten of THREE different formats (pop, mainstream and alternative rock), "You Oughta Know" broke Alanis into the national - and global - conversation. Funnily enough, though, it did NOT succeed in Canada - perhaps her countrymen and countrywomen couldn't reconcile the fresh-faced youngster they once knew with the scornful young woman screaming about fellatio in movie theaters. Their loss?

Clearly. Unleashed in the summer of 1995, "YOK" had such impact that it went onto win two Grammys months later - Rock Song and Rock Female Vocal Performance. (Remember when they had that category? Who am I kidding, y'all probably don't.)

But real impact? A decade and a half later, two of the most successful pop stars of their respective generation - Britney and Beyoncé - cover your song live, and make it a part of the setlist. One even does it on the Grammys!
