As we know, ARTPOP was perceived to be a flop by the media back in 2013/2014 as well as forum members here on ATRL. Gaga was heavily criticised for being 'over', a 'flop' etc etc.

My question is, do you think ARTPOP is unfairly criticised here on ATRL? Do you think it is an underrated gem, or does it deserve all the hate? I personally love the album, and think all her albums tend to all be equal quality wise. I think the anti-Gaga bandwagon + how messy the era was (e.g. management issues, changing singles at the last minute, no music video for BWUW, media blackout etc) negatively impacted people's perceptions of the album itself.

I actually really like the album, but she commercial decline from Born This Way to ARTPOP was kind of tragic, especially after how Gaga, her team, and label hyped the album. Born This Way felt like an event, while ARTPOP felt like an art exhibition gone wrong.

But criticism is a good thing, it can really help the artist sometimes

After two years I can say it has produced four of her best songs.

Everything else is forgettable. It deserves the criticism, but then again her 'underperformance' was pre planned by her label just like R8. While I'm on this topic, the only reason she literally marketed herself as a flop is because of the industry slump. But don't completely take my word for truth because Gaga planned for this to be a big era. Troy planned the underperformance and sabotaged the DWUW release. When the new wave of music approaches she'll be apart of the fresh 'sound' and artists who released during the industry slump might not have the same success. It's all part of her comeback and we've all been played.

If you think about it coming off of a big era like BTW where her image was completely over saturated staging an underperformance is the best route. If she had another big era off of BTW, she'd be done completely. Her team foresaw that and planned her flopping prematurely without the GP.

Not at all, it's actually way too overpraised on ATRL still. I thought by now the majority of Monsters would have finally admitted how horrible it really is, but I guess some things never change.

Hmm interesting perspective. I'm not so sure it's true, but does sound like a fun conspiracy theory. The reason why I don't think it's triue is because it sounds so risky, if the plan fails then that would be a waste of money on Interscope's part, and I doubt Interscope has that much money to spend in this kind of music climate.

The album is still terrible no matter how many years go by. Aura, Gyspy, Applause and DWUW remain the only songs on the album I can stand, but even then, they haven't touched my iTunes. It's just not worth it.

It deserved the criticism it got on here. I know ATRL likes to follow bandwagon and hate on stuff, like right now with Fight Song, but with ARTPOP, there's just no denying how terrible in quality it is. Even Britney Jean is better than it and I deleted over 75% of the tracks off that album from my computer since release.

I would agree but BJ is for sure worse.
