UK Charts: Lily Allen is #1 (and #9), Ellie is #4, Em is #5
By Daniel Lane
Lily Allen scores her third Official Singles Chart Number 1 with Somewhere Only We Know after the closest chart race of 2013!
In the closest chart battle of the year, Lily Allen has surged ahead of midweek leaders Bastille and Gary Barlow to take the Number 1 spot on today’s Official Singles Chart.
Lily’s cover of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know, which is featured on John Lewis’ Christmas TV ad campaign, finishes the week ahead of Bastille’s Of The Night (Number 2) by just 660 copies. This impossibly tight margin is even closer than the 1,150 copies which separated OneRepublic’s Counting Stars when they beat new boyband The Vamps’ Can We Dance to Number 1 last month. Somewhere Only We Know has now become Lily’s third UK Number 1 single (following 2006’s Smile and 2009’s The Fear).
In related news, Lily’s new single Hard Out Here, debuts at Number 9 on today’s Official Singles Chart to give Lily her second Top 10 hit is as many weeks.
Lily tells OfficialCharts.com: "I'm thrilled to be Number 1, and obviously especially delighted to have two tracks in the Top 10. Thanks to everyone who has supported me. I'm really looking forward to 2014!"
Meanwhile, Gary Barlow finishes the week at Number 3 with Let Me Go. The track is taken from the Take That star and X Factor judge’s hotly anticipated fourth solo album, Since I Saw You Last, which is released tomorrow (Monday, November 25).
This week’s Official Singles Chart Top 5 is completed by Ellie Goulding’s Children In Need single, How Long Will I Love You (4) and Eminem’s The Monster FT Rihanna (5).
New Entries
In addition to Bastille’s Of The Night (Number 2), Gary Barlow’s Let Me Go (3) and Lily Allen’s Hard Out Here (9) there are three other new entries on today’s Official Singles Chart.
JLS, who are set to embark on their farewell UK arena tour next week, score their 12th Top 40 hit today with Billion Lights (19). Meanwhile, Justin Bieber enters at Number 30 with PYD FT R. Kelly, and Boyzone enter at 39 with Love Will Save The Day. The track is taken from the Irish boyband’s 20th anniversary album, BZ20, which is released tomorrow.
