Title. I'll explain myself better.
Anytime a new single or album is out, the majority of ATRL discuss for like, two hours about the quality of the music, and then it's all about when the artist will perform, when will we see the artist promoting.
For example, there is now a thread going on about Lana Del Rey in which some users are arguing that if an artist don't promote his/her music, then he/she doesn't care about it. Which is major bs to me.
I'll take another example, Björk. When she released Biophilia in 2011 everyone was complaining about the lack of promo, which meant only two tv performances and no tv interviews. But the truth is that she "promoted" the album in every single possible way. She talked to ALL the magazines, did countless radio interviews, she planned a tour, she released the apps, organized music workshops, released remixes...and every step was covered by multiple music websites. Yet everyone said that she didn't promote it and didn't care for it
Why a lot of users on ATRL are so childish and selfish? My impression is that a lot of people's wish was to have the artist every night on Ellen, Jimmy Fallon, SNL, etc. Just so they could satisfy their own materialistic need to see their favorites artist always having to promote their music in the most tiring possible way. Logistics and human circumstances are not even taken into consideration. I still see people dragging Beyoncé to the pits because she didn't promote her singles "properly", yet she experimented with the most risky act in pop music of the latest years. Even Britney during Britney Jean was literally executed here because she didn't perform on tv. But yet she did multiple interviews and prepared the residency. She worked.
Yet what the majority of users want is a single way of promoting - television. As if Adele needed to promote 21 extensively to sell 20 millions of that album. Rather Be is one of the best selling hits of the year but I haven't seen a single tv performance by Clean Bandit, nor I feel the need to find one.
Discuss. Do you feel the concept of "promotion" is misunderstood here and in general considered more important than the music itself?
