Rihanna vs Lady Gaga -- who is more famous in the US & WW???
It was brought to my attention that Lady Gaga is still more famous than Rihanna in the US and worldwide in another thread. I just have a hard time finding that to be true considering Rihanna was just #1 in Forbes press ranking last year and is also the second my like female on Facebook after Shakira and is currenty the most streamed artist on YouTube/VEVO as well as being the best-selling digital artist of all time.
Is Lady Gaga currently more famous than Rihanna??? Or is Rihanna more famous than Lady Gaga???
I think they are really really really close in the US. But WW is for sure Rihanna because her music is huge in South America. I think Gaga is only bigger in Japan I'd say.
I know in the US, the country I call home, it's definitely Rihanna. Worldwide, I'd say Rihanna too, considering FourFiveSeconds was more global than Applause and her last album and tour did better than Gaga's worldwide, on top of her being more publicized than Gaga.
Also seeing how FFS still can not outsell Applause, rihanna's second and third singles flopping, there is no denying that Gags is more famous and global.
Lady Gaga cemented herself as a household name between 2009-2011, both worldwide and US. The question isn't "which ones latest tour, single or album did slightly better WW". Gaga remains one of the most recognizable figures in the industry.
How do you possibly quantify this? If its total people outside the US, then I'd go with Gaga since she's more known in Asia, the region of the world with the largest population. In the US, they're likely on equal footing, maybe with Gaga being more known by older people (in the anglosphere in general) because of how prominent her name was in building her brand.
