You need 120 credits to graduate, a majority come from your major. Only a few come from your minor and other general required classes such as math, english, science, history, psychology, and philosophy. You take about 15-18 credits per semester (4 months max), So in a calendar year you complete about 30 credits. 30 x 4 is 120, so 4 year plan should work.

So basically most of the colleges in the US are based on the philosophy that the best education allows you to both study a BROAD array of ideas/topics AND focus in on one (or two, or three).. So basically you'll be expected to pick a major (meaning that over the four years you're in college you'll be expected to take "x" amount of classes related to that major. the exact number varies from college to college). you'll then have LOTS of extra classes to take besides that "x" amount for your major. With those *leftover* classes, you'll have the option of just taking a bunch of random classes that together don't really add up to form another major, or you can use those leftover classes and take them all (or most) on one subject (different than your major) and that can allow you to form a second major or a minor (again depending on the college there is a different number of classes needed to form a minor or a second major)
