we are very progressive and at the same time extremely backwards

we have gay marriage , which a lot of countries / progressive places do not have yet , but we don't have any gun control. ya'll do the math.

I'm from Asia and we used to but whilst we still acknowledge America is the world's most powerful country it isn't really that respected anymore (at least post-Iraq war)

But seriously, America is a powerful country and we look to them for camaraderie and protection. But I don't know about progressive issues. I mean, marriage equality is something that I hope Australia accepts partly because of the USA.

Well not anymore recently since I can remember when I was still in Asia. Sure the US is a powerful country, but it has somehow lost it's respect to many countries there.

That would depend on the country. Some people in the Middle East and Asia might consider the US to be quite progressive.

Meanwhile the North American colonization process continues at Standing Rock, but Europeans are the bad ones.
