DESCRIPTION
Welcome to “Create a Film Studio”, the interactive game where creativity and vision reign! Bear with me, because this will take a moment to explain.
To start, we would like to have 5 starting studio participants. These participants, once signed up for the game, will create a graphic and name for a film studio owned exclusively by them (if you would like, LaufeysonMonster is available to create graphics for you). The film studios will be assigned a starting budget of
$50 million, to be used in the next stage of the game. After that is complete, the “release” period of the game begins. In this stage, the film studios use the money they have to hire actors and actresses and produce a completely user-created film with its own plotline, setting, and characters. A full synopsis of the film will be written by the studio, serving as the in-game “release” of the film.
At this point, it becomes necessary to also include five more participants as judges, known in-game as the Audience. These judges will rate the film synopses on a scale of 1 to 10, including at least a paragraph detailing their reasons for rating the film as they did. An average will be taken to determine the reception of the film, and by extension it’s gross.
At a later point, we would like to include real-life franchises. Rather than simply reproducing them, these franchises will be able to be purchased by the studios in order to extend the series with prequels, sequels, or spin-offs; these will not be treated specially and will still rely upon Audience reception.
Mergers and teams will not be allowed at this time.
ACTORS & ACTRESSES
Actors and actresses will be hired for each release a label wishes to make. They will have a listed fee to hire each, determined by their previous success in real life films and their ranking on lists at The Movie Times – the defining factor used to rank them will be the average gross of their last 10 films. Price will be determined on an inverse scale, with the 10 most expensive actors costing $30 million and each set of ten decreasing by $2 million. Hiring a more expensive actor is not guaranteed to boost reception, take note of that!
The lists can be found
here for actors, and
here for actresses.
PRODUCTION
All film studios should submit a paragraph describing the location of filming, any special effects used, and a description of special costumes, clothing, and technology used in the movie. The 5 production appraisers will then each determine how much they think the overall production of the movie will cost, and that will be added to the total cost of creating the movie. Try to make the cost realistic!
AUDIENCE
After the movie’s costs are totaled and the description is handed in by a film studio, the Audience members will evaluate the release. The paragraph submitted during the production phase of the movie should be included. Audience members should take into account the actors used, the quality of the production (remember – bigger is not always better!), and the plotline behind the movie to come up with a final score.
SCORING: PROFITS AND LOSSES
After a final average score is calculated from the scores assigned by the audience, the Box Office Total will be calculated. The average score will be rounded to two decimal places (ex. 8.73 or 3.49) At 5, the movie earns exactly the cost of production, resulting in no net gain for the studio. For each 0.01 points above 5, the movie will earn another 0.5% of its cost in profits. For each 0.01 points below 5, the movie will lose 0.2% of the cost of production.
If a studio falls below $5 million or goes into debt, they will be declared bankrupt and eliminated from the cycle; therefore it would be wise to start off slow and not risk losing all your money on one film. Bankrupt players will be shifted to a new position during the next cycle as usual (see below).
PROGRESSION
Each studio will release
5 movies over a 15 real-life period, which will constitute one cycle of releases. The films should be 3 real-life days apart. After one cycle is completed, the 5 film studio players will be shifted to Audience, the 5 Audience players will be shifted to Production Appraisal, and the 5 Production Appraisal members will be shifted to film studios, creating their own new studios. After 3 cycles have been completed, and all players have been assigned to each position, the game will end and the studio with the most money left will be the victor!
