11 arrested for gay sex in Senegalese town
Quote:
Police in the Senegalese town of Kaolack are said to have arrested 11 people accused of having gay sex, town residents told the Associated Press.
The 11 men, who were detained at a police station, are said to be among 20 people who attended a gay marriage celebration on Friday at a school in the town about 200 kilometres southeast of the capital, Dakar.
Under the laws of the former French colony, where the population is more than 95% Muslim, ‘acts against nature’ are illegal and punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to US$2,500.
In August, seven men were jailed for six months after being caught having sex during a police raid.
A well-known Senegalese journalist Tamsir Jupiter Ndiaye was sentenced by a Dakar court in July to six months in prison for gay sex.
