Ultimate K-Pop Girl Group Rate • Winner revealed!
Welcome to the Ultimate K-Pop Girl Group Singles Rate! This rate features the biggest girl groups to come out of the late-second generation and third generation of K-Pop idols: Girls' Generation, 2NE1, KARA, SISTAR, T-ARA, miss A, After School, 4minute, Secret, f(x), Brown Eyed Girls and the Wonder Girls. For the groups with larger discographies, a selection of 10 singles were taken, and those with smaller discographies had only 8 singles selected.
These groups have captivated the public and managed to command millions of fans over the course of their careers. Turning out hit after hit, they've proven they could stand the test of time. From sugary pop tunes or hip-hop hits, girl power anthems or heart-wrenching ballads - these girls have covered it all.
« Meet the Girls »
BACKGROUND
Girls' Generation » SNSD burst onto the scene in 2007 with their aptly titled debut single, Into the New World. However, it wasn't until 2009 with the release of the mega-hit, Gee - and the equally huge Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) - that Girls' Generation solidified their position as South Korea's premiere girl group. Since then, they've continuously turned out hit after hit after hit. In 2010 they hit the trifecta with the release of Oh!, Run Devil Run and Hoot - each song topped the charts and became instant classics. In the same year they were met with immediate success in Japan and positioned themselves as the leading force of the Hallyu wave. Whilst maintaining their foothold in Japan they continued to crank out the hits in South Korea with The Boys in 2011, Dancing Queen in 2012, I Got a Boy in 2013 and Mr.Mr. in 2014. Girls' Generation's bubbly pop tunes and dance-pop hits have kept them relevant for nearly a decade.
2NE1 » 2NE1 first made their mark as a girl group as a co-lead on the 2009 single, Lollipop with labelmate BIGBANG. They've come a long way since then, sending well over ten singles to the peak of the Gaon chart. Their first solo single, Fire, took the top spot from Lollipop itself and was one of the biggest hits of that year along with their own I Don't Care. In 2010 they sent their single Go Away to #1 and released one of their most well-known singles, Can't Nobody. 2NE1 continued to prove their longevity in 2011 with the release of Lonely and Ugly as well as perhaps their biggest international hit to date, I Am the Best. In 2012-13 2NE1 dropped a few singles not attached to any album, the biggest was 2012's I Love You. The group made a triumphant return in 2014 with the release of their second studio album, Crush. The biggest song off the release was the lead single, Come Back Home, which peaked at #1. 2NE1's unique blend of reggae, hip-hop, R&B and dance have kept them interesting to the mainstream and general public for well over half-a-decade.
SISTAR » SISTAR debuted with their single Push Push in 2010. They continued to push their way to #1 with a string off successful singles from their debut album. Shady Girl landed them their first top 5 appearance when it peaked at #4, How Dare You peaked at #2 and So Cool marked their first time at the peak position of Gaon. SISTAR then released the stand-alone single, Hot Place, at the end of 2011. After the release of Hot Place, SISTAR has kept the top spot of the Gaon chart in their grip with a constant stream of chart-topping singles. The girls made their biggest splash in 2012 with the release of Alone and Loving U, the two were listed among the top 10 biggest singles of that year. SISTAR continued their reign with 2013's Give It to Me and 2014's Touch My Body and I Swear. Their sassy dance-pop hits have continuously made the group a staple in South Korea.
T♔ARA » T-ARA made their debut in 2009, their first major hit came in the form of the infectious electro-hit, Bo Peep Bo Peep. In 2010 the group finally hit #1 with the release of their repackaged single, I Go Crazy Because of You. With the release of their first mini album, Temptastic, T-ARA sent the single What's Wrong? to the top 5. In 2011, T-ARA found their signature sound with the release of Roly-Poly. The song catapulted the group into top-tier status and was ranked as the #1 song of the year on the Gaon digital chart. T-ARA continued to pump out hit after hit with Cry Cry in 2011, Lovey-Dovey, Day by Day and Sexy Love in 2012 as well as Number Nine in 2013. In 2014 the group experimented with the EDM-fueled single, Sugar Free. Despite the groups ups and downs, T-ARA has constantly captivated the public with their insanely catchy hits.
KARA » KARA made their debut in 2007 and have made serious strives to become one of the biggest international South Korean girl groups of this decade. In 2008 they sent their sixth single, Pretty Girl, to #2 on the charts. Following their new-found success, they sent their repackaged singe, Honey, to the top spot. South Korea developed a sweet-tooth for KARA's sugary sweet pop songs and they continued to pave their road to success with back-to-back top 3 hits Wanna, Mister and Lupin. With a catalog of hits behind them, KARA made their transition from K-Pop to J-Pop in 2010. Their million selling J-Pop single, Jumping, was an equally big million selling K-Pop hit in 2010. KARA continued to dot the top 10 of the Gaon chart yearly with the release of Step in 2011, Pandora in 2012, Damaged Lady in 2013 and Mamma Mia in 2014. KARA's consistently sweet poppy releases have kept them a staple on the charts and in the homes of South Korea's pop fans ever since their debut.
miss A » miss A debuted in 2010 with the instant-hit Bad Girl Good Girl. The single hit #1 and topped the year-end digital chart in 2010. The group sent three more singles to the top 10 from their first album, including; Breathe, Love Alone and Good Bye Baby. Good Bye Baby topped the charts and became their best selling single to date. miss A continued their reign with Touch and I Don't Need a Man in 2012 and Hush in 2013. miss A's slick dance-pop songs have allowed them to sustain a consistent top 10 streak since their debut.
After School » After School debuted in 2009 with the release of Ah and their follow-up single, Diva. The group made their major break through with the release of Because of You, which topped the charts all over South Korea. With the release of Bang! at the beginning of 2010, After School managed their first and only (official) multi-million selling single. After School's fresh approach to pop and admission-graduation system have kept them interesting to South Korea's public throughout each group generation.
4minute » 4minute debuted in 2009 with the electro-pop single Hot Issue. The single topped the 4 million mark and became one of the biggest hits of the year. 4minute continued to send singles into the top 10 of the charts, including 2009's Muzik and What a Girl Wants, 2010's HuH and I My Me Mine, 2011's Heart to Heart and Mirror Mirror as well as 2012's Volume Up. The group finally hit the top spot on the Gaon chart in 2013, 4 years after their debut, with What's Your Name? and followed that up with another #1 hit in 2014 titled Whatcha Doin' Today. 4minute's unique blend of hip-pop and electropop songs have solidified 4minute's status as one of South Korea's most consistent hit-makers.
Secret » Secret debuted in 2009 and scored their first major hit with their second single, Magic, in 2010. That song was followed up with their first #1 single, Madonna. Secret quickly racked up hit after hit including Shy Boy, Starlight Moonlight, Love Is Move, Poison, Talk That, YooHoo, I Do I Do and I'm In Love - with Starlight Moonlight sold nearly 3 million copies, becoming their best selling hit. Secret's bubblegum infused retro dance smashes have made the group one of the most recognizable girl groups in South Korea.
f(x) » f(x) debuted in 2009 with the top 5 singles LA chA TA and Chu~♥. The group scored their first #1 single with 2010's Nu ABO and ran a top 2 single streak ever since, including the #2 hits Hot Summer and Red Light and the #1 hits Pinocchio, Electric Shock and Rum Pum Pum Pum. f(x)'s snappy electro-pop singles have allowed them to maintain a top tier status for over half a decade.
Brown Eyed Girls » The Brown Eyed Girls debuted in 2006, making them the oldest girl group in this rate. The group topped the charts with their second single, Hold the Line. While the Brown Eyed Girls maintained a very successful track record with #1 hits L.O.V.E. and How Come, among other top 10 hits, the Brown Eyed Girls hit the big-time with the mega-hit Abracadabra in 2009. The song shot to the top of the charts and sold nearly 5 million copies. The girls followed-up Abracadabra with another #1 single, Sign. While they didn't replicate Abracadabra's success, they still maintained a constant stream of top 10 singles, including 2011's Hot Shot, Sixth Sense and Cleansing Cream and 2013's Recipe and Kill Bill. The Brown Eyed Girls have successfully integrated a unique blend of R&B and dance-pop that has constantly pushed the group to the top of the charts for nearly a decade, proving their staying power.
Wonder Girls » The Wonder Girls debuted in 2007 with their single The Wonder Begins aka Irony. The song was an instant hit and was succeeded by an even bigger hit titled Tell Me - a song that catapulted the girls into superstardom. The group continued to pump out hit after hit, including the top 3 peaking This Fool in 2007 and the #1 hits So Hot and Nobody in 2008. Nobody is their biggest hit to date, selling a whopping 4.6 million copies. Additionally, the song is the highest peaking song on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 by a South Korean group. Juggling footholds in the Western, Chinese, Japanese and Korean markets didn't stop the group from releasing many more successful singles including 2010's 2 Different Tears (6th on the year-end digital chart), 2011's Be My Baby (nearly 4 million copies sold) and 2012's Like This. Although catered to Western markets, the singles The DJ Is Mine and Like Money both placed high on the Gaon chart (with the former selling over 1 million copies and going top 10). Although currently on hiatus, the Wonder Girls' legacy is one that cannot be diminished and that throughout the ups and downs, the girls have maintained a hugely successful, and global, career for nearly a decade.
- Assign each track a score between 1 and 10; decimal point scores are accepted, but only those to the tenth place (i.e 9.5, 8.3, etc.). If you assign a score of 0, it will be rounded up to a 1.
- When assigning a decimal point score use a period (".") and not a comma (","), it's much easier to calculate scores when scores are written this way.
- Be sure to double check your ballots for missing scores. A song with a missing score will be automatically given a score of 1.
- Send your rates to me via private message, don't post them in the thread!
- PLEASE use the PM friendly list near the end of this post!!
- Rates will be due January 6th, 2015 at 10:00PM EST.
- Don't troll, bitches!
Near the bottom of the thread there is a PM friendly list in a collapse tag, each song listed is hyperlinked to a YouTube link where you can listen to the song easily.
