If in the future you have children (or you already do), would you/do you, allow your children to wear clothing that is typically against the gender norm e.g. would you allow a boy to wear a dress or a girl to wear a suit if they wanted to? Would you also allow your children to wear colours often seen as being appropriate for the opposite gender? What are your opinions on this matter? How do you think it affects the child?

This thread has absolutely NOTHING to do with transphobia. Many children do not even understand the concept of transgenderism. This is simply a question about gender norms and parenting.

Im going to be honest and say I wont let them. because i'll be worried for them in terms of bullying. it will just make their lives harder as kids because most kids won't accepte it in school and will bully my precious baby to the point of suicide possibly. but when they grow up and develop tougher skin they can do whatever they like and i will support it 100%
(this all applies if they just feel curious to wear certain clothing items...if they are fixated on the idea of wearing a dress or a boy shirt or whatever then i will let them because it is possible that they might me transgenderd and that I'm being a part of the problem and struggle by not allowing them to express their true gender identity.)

Precisely what I wanted to say. As children it is the parents' job to care and nurture them, they can make their own decisions once they are grown and fully aware of what they desire.

Not a fan of children but if I had any they would wear cisnormative, gender-specific clothing whether they like it or not, and the same goes for toys, television and activities.

They are going to dress like the gender they are till they are 18 and they are fully aware of the route they want to go with their life. Im not going to let a 6 year-old take such a decision

sad. So if your 12 year old daughter started dressing like a boy and played basketball would you stop her? Probably not, masculinity isn't seen as a bad thing

But if your son wants to wear a blouse and ice skate it's the end of the world.

Yeah I would let them. But I would also make sure that they know they could get teased for it? I mean if I had a young boy who wanted to wear a skirt/dress I feel like I should let him... even if he gets teased for it. I just don't think not allowing it would lead to good results.

Yeah, that's how I feel too. Like, I'd let them do what they wanted but I'd be a bit nervous. I feel like we should probably teach children to be less judgmental about other people's clothing though, rather than not allowing someone to wear something because they might get bullied. They shouldn't have to go through that.

To be honest you were probably right, I probably shouldn't have made this . I genuinely didn't do it to make it a trans* issue, it was more about parenting and gender norms but it's obviously not worked out that way.

I will figure this out if I choose to have kids. Otherwise this conversation, for me at least, are a bit premature

This thread isn't asking about parents "making" their children wear clothes against the gender norm. It's about parents and whether they would let their child (who probably has no real concept of gender norms) wear what they like to make them feel comfortable.
