Achilles 2016: Fantastic Music and Where to Find It
2016. A **** show. The absolute worst year of my lifetime. We started the year with the loss of the most influential and most interesting man in music history, and it all went downhill from there. This year, women lost, the gays lost, people of color lost, immigrants lost, religious minorities lost, people with disabilities lost, talent (mostly) lost, human decency lost, feminism lost, intelligence lost, facts lost, JK Rowling lost, and-friendly reminder-Lady Gaga lost the Oscar!
Unfortunately, music has not offered much escape from the overarching 2016 losing streak. Whether it was the deaths of a handful of all-time greats, or Lorde and HAIM's utter inability to show up, or old faves of mine failing to live up to their past releases, or should-be smash hits failing to make a dent on the charts, this was a year of great loss.
But it hasn't all been bad. There was some fantastic music this year, and I'm gonna tell you where to find it-well, some of it, anyways. Obviously, some of 2016's best music has mastered the art of camouflage, considering it cannot be found on Spotify, YouTube, or any other free-access streaming service (as such, I have mostly forgotten what 75% of Lemonade sounds like).
