1D to be guest mentors for X Factor Australia, UK and US
Quote:
One Direction is already confirmed to be a guest mentor on "The X Factor" Australia. Sources tell me that the group will also be a guest mentor on "The X Factor" U.K., and will likely be a guest mentor on "The X Factor" U.S.
One Direction will mentor contestants in the Groups category in the "judges' houses" phase of the competition, which features the judges getting assistance from guest mentors in deciding which contestants will advance to the "live shows" phase of the competition. One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, and has since gone on to to become the biggest global act to emerge from "The X Factor." One Direction has had No. 1 hits (including the group's first album, "Up All Night") and sold-out tours in several countries.
One Direction will be in London in July 2012 to mentor contestants from "The X Factor" Australia and "The X Factor" U.K., since One Direction has been busy recording the group's second album in London. "The X Factor" U.S. judges' houses phase of the competition in 2012 will be pre-taped in late August in cities to be determined.
In 2012, the Groups category will be mentored on "The X Factor" Australia by judge Ronan Keating (who is a member of Boyzone), and on "The X Factor" U.K. by judge Nicole Scherzinger, who is a former member of the Pussycat Dolls. "The X Factor" executive producer Simon Cowell, who mentored One Direction when he was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K., is keen to mentor the Groups category on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2012, so that he can have One Direction by his side as a guest mentor.
Since Cowell is the only judge on "The X Factor" U.S. who is also an executive producer of the show, he will most likely get the Groups category. (Cowell has been saying in recent interviews that he thinks he can find the next big boy band in America.)
One Direction's five members (Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson) originally auditioned for "The X Factor" U.K. as solo singers, but they were rejected as solo singers and put in a group by Cowell and other "X Factor" decision makers, including Scherzinger, who was a guest judge on the show at the time. Cowell signed One Direction to Syco Music, the record company that he co-owns with Sony Music.
Sources tell me that Scherzinger has used her part in helping create One Direction as leverage in getting the Groups category on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2012. It's also one of the main reasons why she was able to become a permanent judge on "The X Factor" U.K. in June 2012, after she was fired from "The X Factor" U.S. in January 2012. (Scherzinger is now telling the media that she wasn't fired, even though she pretty much admitted in interviews that she was fired at the time it happened.) If One Direction's massive worldwide breakthrough had not happened in the spring of 2012, it's highly unlikely that Scherzinger would have been asked to become a permanent judge on "The X Factor" U.K.
One Direction is also tentatively scheduled to perform on "The X Factor" U.K. and "The X Factor" U.S. in 2012, since the group's second album will be released in the last quarter of 2012 when both shows are televised. The album's title, songs and release date are to be announced.
