Yours Truly was unlike much of pop radio back when it was released. Yes, it was influenced by Mariah Carey and 90s RnB in general, but that kind of music hadn't been successful for a long time. But The Way still smashed the charts.
However, on her new album, Ariana doesn't seem to care about her artistry anymore. Problem sounds like it was made because of the success of horn-lead singles Talk Dirty and Thrift Shop. Break Free sounds like it was made because of the moderate success of Zedd collaborations (ARTPOP, Clarity, Stay the Night). Why did Ariana decide to chase these pop radio trends instead of evolving the sound of her debut album? Why does Ariana seem more content with being a pop star instead of an artist?
