I just saw on Twitter that Katy's movie only pulled in $12,000,000 over the weekend in the US. I was shocked because Katy is obviously such a huge digital force in the US. Was there a lack of promo or did any other factors lead to it's disappointing start? Discuss...
She doesn't have a strong and wide fanbase compared to Miley and Bieber and the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man is also showing in the theaters together with such hits like Ted and Magic Mike.
Singles and albums are way more different than movies. Comparing them to movies is just wrong. The film industry is way more different than the music industry so Katy being the digital queen doesn't have anything to do with her movie underperforming.

So are you basically saying that Katy's appeal doesn't stretch further than 99c singles? I mean, I'm shocked the such a high number of people bothered to buy her singles but weren't interested enough to go and see her movie...
1. Her career hasn't been long, controversial, interesting enough, let alone iconic to drive the general public.
2. She doesn't have a huge/strong/dedicated/diverse fanbase.
Edit : Maybe timing was inappropriate too,but the promotional campaign was HUGE.

You act like buying singles are on par and the same to having the effort to go to a cinema and buy movie tickets.
Well baring in mind its budget is only $12m, it will almost certainly surpass that. It was never goign to be a mega-blockbuster, but to be honest I do think they were hoping for a slightly higher performance.
I think Katy does not have the interest surrounding her for people to see her movie yet. She hasn't done anything remarkable or iconic like Gaga, Madonna, Jessie J etc.
I went to see the film yesterday and there were about three people in the cinema. Says it all really...just not enough interest.
Don't be mad because Katy Perry was able to have a successful era with 8 top 10s spanning in 2 years while a certain pop act release 5 singles in 10 months with no longevity what so ever...
Anyways,
Katy is doing well at the box office... some people are just jealous because their fave doesn't have a feature film.
