Self-Titled Changed The Music Industry

It took a while for many artists to catch up, but now that some time has passed, it is clear that leaving little time in between when the public knows about a release and its actual availability is becoming the new norm. It may be tricky to pull off, but the tactic has been working. This year has seen several albums chart and sell well, in part thanks to the surprise factor that has so delighted fans. Drake has debuted two albums at number one on the Billboard 200, both of which came with less than a week’s warning. Fellow rappers A$AP Rocky and Lil Wayne also dropped new full length projects with little advance notice, and they came out with quite the bang.

While not every CD that’s released is a surprise these days, the way record labels and public relations teams share news about the new projects from the most popular stars is still noticeably different. The practice of leaving very little time in between official announcements and street dates is one that can be very effective, but which isn’t mean for everyone. While Adele has the clout to release a new single less than one month before her new album and have it work perfectly, a lesser-known artist or a brand new act wouldn’t see similar results. Up-and-coming names still require a lengthy introductions to the public.

So yes, you can expect the music industry to keep you on your toes with more surprise releases in the near future. If you don’t like it, don’t blame me, blame Queen B.

The Vegas strip has seen more impact than the digital music landscape since 2013.

In fact, the oops record seems to have more impact seeing all these girls coming up with gimmicks to beat it. ST being a direct example.
