Sir Bobby Robson's David Beckham fear
Beckham is in the squad for Wednesday's friendly with Germany but former England manager Robson believes his days could be numbered. "I wouldn't want to say anything against David Beckham because he's a fine boy and has served our country well," Robson said.
advertisement"In the short term, he looks OK. But the longer he plays in America, with respect to the football being played there, the less competitive he will become.
"He will lose the match sharpness he needs to play at the top level with England."
Steve McClaren's England options narrow
Robson also believes Beckham will find the gruelling schedule difficult, saying: "How he can play for England on a Wednesday after playing for Los Angeles on a Friday night, I will never know."
Beckham set up three goals in his first full MLS match on Saturday, but his Los Angeles Galaxy side still lost 5-4 to the New York Red Bulls. The former England captain helped attract a crowd of 66,237 to Giants Stadium, a record for a league match. The average attendance for Red Bulls games is around 11,500.
Beckham is due to land in London this morning following a flight from New York. He hopes to earn his 97th England cap against the Germans at Wembley, despite a nagging ankle injury. He said: "My ankle took a pounding - I am not used to this artificial surface and there were a couple of instances where I rolled over on my ankle.
"It is more swollen than it was before the game, but I'm sure it is going to be fine for Wednesday."
