Ke$ha wants to reinvent pop music
Misunderstood. Talented. Calculated. Honest. Brash. Bratty. ****ty. Refreshing.
There are many words that have been used to describe, sometimes denigrate, the music and persona of pop star Ke$ha, most of which she admits to being perfectly fine with.
But there’s one particular descriptor that the 24-year-old Tik Tok performer thinks best describes her and the sexually charged, wild-time party songs she performs, and it’s one that seems more fitting a punk or underground rock artist then a dance-pop princess.
“I think it’s the most subversive thing in the world that I’m singing about what I sing about, but I’m singing it on pop radio,” she says, while hurtling toward Kansas City on a tour bus. “That, to me, is incredibly subversive and hilarious and I kind of live for that.
“It’s a little bit like a middle finger to society to be able to sing about what I sing about and have it be on Top 40 radio. It’s fun for me to play my psychological games with society.”
Tonight, the singer, born Kesha Rose Sebert, returns to town for the first time since opening for Rihanna more than a year ago, and this time, she’s headlining the Dome show.
It’s a pretty good indicator of how far she’s come and how well she’s ridden that attitude and image since dropping her first fulllength album, Animal, at the beginning of that year.
From having her hit become the first non-Simpsons theme song to open the long-running animated show to appearances on Saturday Night Live, to numerous musicawards nominations, the release of another massive-selling EP (Cannibal), to writing hit songs for other artists, collaborations and, of course, a seemingly endless tour of the world, she’s ridden the forward momentum at a pretty exhaustive level.
“I can sleep when I’m dead,” she says simply.
It’s that kind of attitude that, again, indicate that Ke$ha isn’t your typical Britney or Miley - something she’s adamant about - and puts her more in the mould of those performers that reportedly influenced her when she was younger. True, Animal is a record that was heavily influenced by the Beastie Boys, but she says that onstage and in her heart - not to mention offstage and in the hotel room - she shares a kinship with, such as the Iggys and the Freddies of the classic-rock world.
“The people who are my idols are all frontmen for rock ‘n’ roll bands, and I think it’s really important for my show to have elements of rock ‘n’ roll,” she says.
“For me, rock ‘n’ roll is dangerous and it’s sexual and it’s spontaneous and I feel like those are all the same descriptions that I would want someone to use in describing my show.”
It is, also, perhaps the direction, musically, she thinks she’s heading, and could be what informs and directs with her next record which she says should drop early next year - although she’s certainly in no hurry.
“I want to take enough time to make sure it’s the reinvention of pop music,” she says. “That’s the ultimate goal, to reinvent pop music. So I’m planning on taking as much time as I need, but May sounds about right.”
Reinventing, possibly, or perhaps even disregarding entirely. A recent collaboration with shockrock icon Alice Cooper and comments that he made after the pair hooked up together for the song would indicate that the next thing she does will be less pop-oriented and more in keeping with the Janis Joplin rock goddess she has inside of her.
“I definitely could see that happening in my future. With the evolution of my next record that I’m working on right now, and just meeting people like (Alice Cooper), and meeting Robert Plant - those are the people that I listen to,” she says.
“If you were to ask me what my favourite song is on pop radio is I can’t really answer that because I don’t really listen to it that much. The second I get offstage the first song that plays is Iggy Pop. I’m more well versed in old school, more rock ‘n’ roll because that’s what I like listening to.
“So I wouldn’t be surprised if my next record does have more of an edge.”
Still, as Ke$ha alludes, even in its current dancier incarnation her music does have something of an edge to it - one that is a little bluer and maybe a little ballsier than even Rihanna at her S&M-iest.
She’s been chastised by some for her hyper-sexualized lyrics and her unabashed love of the party lifestyle - drinking and many other -ings. Many are critical of the fact that she is on pop radio and does, as a result, reach a predominantly younger audience, who may not get her attempts at subversion or may not be old enough to make the distinction between lifestyle choice and reality. Of that, she understands, but is entirely unapologetic.
“I know that adolescents love the dangerous, they love the mischievous and they love a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll, which, quite frankly has been a lost art for a little while now. And when I was younger I always gravitated towards things that were slightly naughty,” she continues.
“So, yes, is my music slightly naughty? Absolutely, because that’s the kind of person I am. I also wrote this record off of my life experiences. So, I’m nobody’s babysitter. If you don’t like my record or you think it’s inappropriate, again, turn it off or don’t buy it, I’m not offended.
“But I’m not going to change who I am because some people don’t like it.”
In fact, that, ultimately, is the message she hopes that people - especially her younger audience - get from her, that she’s simply embracing and celebrating who she is. She is, she says, living a carefree lifestyle based on creativity and freedom of self expression, despite those who might feel she’s merely a different, saucier take on the pre-packaged pop stars.
“People probably want to believe it’s not real because it is incredibly free, which is probably intimidating,” she counters, while crediting the open relationship she had with her own mother for allowing her to be who she is.
“It’s refreshing to feel like you can be honest,” she says. “I have nothing to hide, I have nothing to be ashamed of, I have nothing to be embarrassed by.
“I’m not perfect. Yeah, sometimes I drink. I am responsible, I don’t drink and drive.
“And yes I have sex, but I have sex with condoms, I do it safely. Nothing I’m doing about I should be ashamed of because none of it’s wrong. So I speak about it openly and quite honestly it’s refreshing I think to probably hear somebody be honest.
“I am having sex and drinking - so are other kids my age … I’m more of a positive influence because I feel like they feel like they can be honest with me and I can be honest with them.”

Reinvent pop music? Gurl please. We've already witnessed Gaga saying all those things about the Born This Way album and we saw how that turned out to be.

Songs about sex and partying: subversive, unlike pop and more fitting for the underground. You go girl! :tears:

Atleast she actually has the talent to reinvent pop music. You can't really judge until you've heard something. She's only had one album/ bod of work. You guys have no idea how far she can go.
