The '90s were a great time for R&B music; new jack swing ushered in the decade dominating the charts, and hip hop soul balladry closed it out on top. Along the way, a trio of stars were born: Aaliyah, Brandy and Monica—three R&B princesses who were just teenagers when their debut albums hit shelves within a year of each other in 1994-95. They each spent a period on top of the game, until they were all eventually surpassed by the bubblegum pop movement. But which one did it best? It's time to find out.
In this rate, the good voters of ATRL will determine whose singles catalog—limited to those songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100, for the sake of feasibility—is the one to beat. Is it Aaliyah, the sultry bad girl whose close collaborations with R. Kelly and Timbaland produced some enduring classics? Or maybe Brandy, with her blockbuster sales and one of the most distinctive voices of the era? Perhaps it was Monica, who rode her urban edge, and then her Diane Warren ballads, on an impressive run of top ten hits. You can help decide by listening to the following 50 tracks, ranking each one individually on a scale from 1-10, and then sending me your ballot by Saturday, March 31. Those results will determine which song stands above the rest—and which princess truly deserves the crown.

Unfortunate because I think "Come Back in One Piece" is one of Aaliyah's best, but it didn't chart.
Yes. It is the most fitting, and it's kind of why I suggested this rate at this time!
Alright, I'm going to axe "Trust," since it was unclear whether Monica was actually a co-lead or just a feature on that track, and replace it with "It All Belongs to Me." Hopefully it will chart on the Hot 100 in the next few weeks anyway.
