Die Antwoord Blast Lady Gaga, Reveal They Turned Down Tour
Die Antwoord is a hip hop/pop/elector group hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, and they are the real deal. MTV News had a rare opportunity to chat with the band about their music and sound, getting dropped by their record label and turning down a tour with "******" Lady Gaga.
"
Our stuff is like f*cking hardcore like solid heavyweight! We want it to be like a secret mind-f*ck! People are like what the f*ck is this the first time they hear it. We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they've got, like, soul. It's not like weak, superficial sh*t. You know?" says lead singer Ninja (real name Watkin Tudor Jones).
Although the band was signed to Interscope Records, they left the label after they claim the executives tried to turn them into something they were not, in the vein of "******" artists like "Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas".
"I think they though we were just like a weird, strange act, then like 'Let's just let them have their fun for a while, and then when it comes to their second album we'll have them play games'". says Ninja, clearly hitting a nerve."
They were looking at Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas and that type of ****** pop music, and were thinking we could like twist into that."
So, the band wouldn't call themselves fans of Mother Monster, then?
"Lady Gaga asked us to tour with her and we were like, um, no thanks."
