New Superband Mt. Desolation: Keane+The Killers
Are super groups to music as 3-D effects are to movies? Is this just a fad that’s come back around only to go out of style or take a hiatus? We can’t say anything definite about that but we do know that both super groups and 3-D effects enhance our memories of hearing and seeing. It’ a question to think about since such a large (and random) amount of musicians have come together in form of a new band.
At this rate, there might be as many super group bands as there are movies released in 3-D! Okay, maybe that’s a bit presumptuous but can you blame us when we’ve got Mt. Desolation to add to the bunch?
Okay, you also don’t care too much for this analogy. So, who is Mt. Desolation? According to TwentyFourBit and NME (via Consequence of Sound), Mt. Desolation is Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci, Keane keyboard player/songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley and live bassist Jesse Quin, Long Winters singer John Roderick and Mumford & Sons banjo player Winston Marshall. That’s not it either! Also filling out the band’s roster will be Noah and The Whale’s fiddle player Tom Hobden. Keane and The Killers may have gone down a couple of notches in our point of view with their latest releases, but it’ll definitely be interesting to hear what these talented musicians can do together.
Another interesting note our buddies at CoS pointed out: This is a country super group. (Apparently, they’re working on an “album of country songs.”) Sound vaguely familiar to another super group? How about Monsters of Folk? The latter is more folk than it is country, but Mt. Desolation sure won’t be compared to Them Crooked Vultures or Atoms for Peace.
The word on the street is that Emery Dobyns is heading as producer and is aiming for a late 2010 release. Mt. Desolation is currently scheduled to debut themselves as a live act on June 4th at Luminaire in London and if you’re so inclined to find more out, you can head over to their blog.
