The MTV VMAs on September 12, 2010 saw perhaps the height of Gaga's stardom, sweeping a record 8 awards, the highest viewership since 2002, the infamous meat dress and the announcement of the star's next lead single. This thread is going to focus on that last one.
After "Bad Romance" won Video of the Year, Gaga came onstage, and in her speech, announced the title of her next lead single, "Born This Way", and sang its chorus to much media and pop culture attention. Following that, a wave of self-empowerment anthems as singles began in the fall and winter of 2010 including, but not limited to, "We R Who We R", "Raise Your Glass" and "****in' Perfect". These songs were all quickly released as singles in the short period between Gaga's announcement of her next lead single in September, and its release in January, where it debuted at #1 and stayed for six weeks.
The question of this thread is, was Gaga responsible for this massive wave of self-empowerment anthems AS SINGLES in the fall and winter of 2010 by artists including P!nk and Kesha? Did competing artists try to capitalize off of the peak of Gaga's hype, fame and glory in the gap between "Born This Way"'s announcement and release for their own commercial benefit?
Discuss.
