Adele, Bruno Mars Dominate Grammy Nominations, Taylor Swift Snubbed Those who assumed this year’s Grammys would have no choice but to recognize Taylor Swift, who won Album of the Year two years ago, learned why assumptions are never a good idea.
Swift and her music are notably absent from the key categories in this year’s Grammy Awards, for which nominations were announced Wednesday.
Kanye West was also snubbed by the album of the year category, one for which many believed he was a lock this year. He did score a Song of the Year nod.
"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," heralded by many critics as the best album of 2010 — was not in the best album category, and all of his other nominations were relegated to the rap fields.
Other notable omissions in the top categories included country phenomenon Taylor Swift and veteran crooner Tony Bennett.
Nominations for the 2012 Grammy Awards give big props to short-fused rapper Kanye West, but pop-country darling Taylor Swift, one of the year's biggest sellers, was shut out of the major categories.
All but one of West's nominations came in genre slots. Conspicuous by its absence in the album of the year category is his hit "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," which entered the chart at No. 1 with a 496,000-unit week last December. His hot-selling 2011 collaboration with Jay-Z, "Watch the Throne," was similarly dissed.
1. Neither Taylor Swift Nor Kanye West Nominated for Album of the Year?! Is this somebody's idea of a clever-slash-sick joke, i.e., how do you bring together the all-time awards-show fun couple? Shut them both out of the top category?! The snubs, for Swift's Speak Now and West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, are all the most snub-y because the country queen and the rapper are Grammy regulars—Swift was the darling of 2010; you can set your watch by West's annual upset loss in the category. Well, at least this year Ms. Swift's old pal can get an early start on his carping.
