A Chicago singer who appeared on the Mexican version of The Voice in 2011 was shot and critically wounded in an ambush shortly after celebrating his birthday with friends.
Friends say 45-year-old Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes was shot three times in the head late Thursday outside his Tras Bambalinas School on Chicago's southwest side.
Fuentes was celebrating his birthday there when he got into his car with friends and an armed man suddenly ordered Fuentes out of that vehicle and shot him.
Miguel Sanchez tells WLS-TV that his critically wounded friend is in a "big battle for his life."
Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes died this afternoon at Mount Sinai hospital.
After leaving a celebration of his birthday there Thursday night, Fuentes was sitting in his red convertible when he was approached by a gunman who ordered him out of the car. He refused, and witnesses say he was shot several times in the head.
The gunman fled the scene in a waiting vehicle. No one is in custody for the shooting, and police are looking into whether it was an attempted carjacking or robbery.
Fuentes' sister flew in from Mexico to be by his side, and many of his friends and students were keeping vigil around the clock at the hospital. They say he was a positive person who touched many lives with his talent.
