'American Idol' boss wants to reveal vote ranking every week
Quote:
American Idol's executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has revealed that he is interested in introducing information about the vote ranking in the new season.
The second season of The X Factor USA recently introduced details about the public voting, revealing how popular each act was every week.
Speaking to reporters on a conference call yesterday, Lythgoe admitted that he has been keen to introduce a similar format to American Idol for a long time.
"It's very amusing to me because it's something that we've wanted to do for eight, nine years," he said. "We did it in England with Pop Idol and I had always been stopped from doing it in this country with people saying, 'Oh no, people will stop voting if you show that one person is winning', like a Carrie Underwood who won every week."
Lythgoe explained that he never believed the information would stop people from supporting the acts and added that he is disappointed X Factor did it first.
"All of a sudden they managed to do it on The X Factor, so I was a little, you know, 'Damn it, now it looks like we're going to be copying them'," he said. "And the one thing I believe about American Idol is everyone copies American Idol.
"But yes, I thought it was a good move. I thought it was a good move from when we first came here. I think it doesn't stop people voting. I think it makes people more passionate to see their person do well, so I liked it."
Lythgoe added that the American Idol producers will "still discuss" the idea, saying: "I'm not sure how we'll do it. I also like the idea of doing a sort of conference like the NBA do and say, 'Let's see how the west voted for you, let's see how the east voted for you, let's see how the north voted for you' and build the figures up so you can see where the votes are coming in from."
He concluded by suggesting that the move could liven up results shows, saying: "Anything like that, that garners interest and fills a show out that is generally 99% padding, any way we can make that exciting I really want to look at, and now that X Factor's managed to do that I will be fighting tooth and nail."
The new season of American Idol starts with a two-night premiere next Wednesday and Thursday (January 16 and 17) on Fox. UK viewers will be able to watch the new season on 5* when the first episode debuts at 8pm on Thursday, January 17.
