Ireland now allows people to choose their legal gender
Quote:
Transgender people in Ireland will now be able to change their legal gender without having to undergo surgery or sterilization as long as they are over the age of 18, The Guardian reports.
Ireland passed the gender recognition bill just months after being the first country to legalize same-sex marriage.
Sara Phillips, the chair of Transgender Equality Network, said of the bill, "This is a historic moment for the trans community in Ireland. Trans people should be the experts of our own gender identity. Self-determination is at the core of our human rights."
The only drawback here seems to be the age restriction, since people who are between 16 and 18 will still have to undergo medical observation, parental consent, and a court order if they want to change their gender. Plus, the bill also leaves out intersex and non-binary people who should also be allowed to have a say in their legal genders.
Barring the fact that it's still far from a perfect world, this is still a huge step in the right () direction.
